PARDONS BOARD GRANTS BLAKE REPRIEVE FOR MURDER CASE
Governor Moody granted Robert W. Blake of Swisher County a reprieve delaying execution from January 11 to February. The stay allows his mother and uncle additional time to gather information for a possible commutation plea. Blake, a former Amarillo high school student, killed Fred Conner, an automobile salesman, after accepting a ride near Yulia and fled for over a year before capture by Frank Norfleet. George P. Owens of this city was arrested by police for forging and cashing on a telegram by signing another’s name to request funds. He allegedly used the name of C. W. Finley Albuquerque prohibition agent to a Western Union message. Owens, a former New Mexico state prison convict on parole, was identified by Western Union officials and transferred to county jurisdiction.
