Freighter and yawl rescued after Atlantic storm near Nantucket
A 70 foot yawl named Petrel and the Liberian registered freighter Georgia were battered in a mid Atlantic storm about 200 miles east of Nantucket. The Petrel was towed by Coast Guard cutter Tamaroa with five volunteers aboard. The Georgia was towed to Philadelphia by Merritt Chapman & Scott salvage vessel Curh after refueling ran out. The Coast Guard reported no inquiries among the 29 Greek seamen aboard the Georgia and noted the ship's 10000 ton iron ore cargo. The Georgia previously faced a heavy list and feared breakup as 25 foot waves and 35 mile per hour winds battered its canvas hatches.
