Amarillo Globe-News names Virgil P Patterson top on the list for 1965 honors while reports highlight a $5 million hospital drive and a spate of burglaries. The first Amarillo birth of 1965 arrives at Northwest Texas Hospital. Seven county officials took office New Year’s Day before Potter County court.
Two deaths in two South Plains wrecks before 4 a.m. Friday and a 1964 collision at Plainview are noted. Southwestern Public Service plans over 24 million dollars in Panhandle upgrades and Borger Pampa high voltage work.
A fleet of helicopters ferried about 1 000 Vietnamese soldiers to Binh Gia as government forces press a five day fight with a tenacious Viet Cong regiment. An American captain and a marine battalion commander were killed in an ambush, raising U S casualties to five dead, two captured and at least 11 wounded. Snipers targeted U S servicemen on the Saigon River New Year’s Day, while a Navy commander was lightly injured when a grenade was tossed at him during a patrol.
NASA said Mariner IV launched November 28 and had traveled over 50 million miles toward Mars by early January. It transmits about 33 bits per second, dropping to 8 1/3 bits as distance grows, and is due to pass Mars on July 14 to capture 22 close-range pictures.
President Johnson ordered a government inquiry into recent selective steel price increases. White House Press Secretary George E. Reedy said Chairman Gardner Ackley of the Council of Economic Advisers would determine if federal action is warranted. Johnson is concerned about boosts by several companies on certain steel items.
The day brought varied climes with snow in Lansing Michigan and warm 70s in Corpus Christi Texas. In Amarillo the 66 degree weather drew tennis players Janie Sadler and Kirby Oldfather to the courts while Corpus Christi hosted 1,500 swimmers for the 11th annual New Year’s Day Swim.
A New Zealand nurse says the Scot James Rodgers stood by American William McChesney as rebels killed him at Wamba Congo. Rodgers died amid the same attack, while McChesney was trampled or drowned and mutilated. Survivors say rebels fled Stanleyville and massacred most Belgian men including bishops and priests.
Virgil P. Patterson, Amarillo's 1964 Man of the Year, chairs the High Plains Hospital Fund drive to raise five million dollars for a modern hospital. Patterson, a Methodist and head of Furst National Bank, is praised for community service and long leadership in banking and Amarillo civic affairs.
An 18 year old Palo Duro High student James Alexander Harps died after a two car collision at FM 2176 and Cherry north of the city. Driver Sam Carr 17 and Rex Burns 18 were involved with Carr treated and released. Harps born in Provo Utah survived by brothers and grandparents. Funeral plans are pending.
A woman identified as Ruby Faye Tony, 19, died from a single back head shot while two men, porter Thomas Hudgens Jr., 35, and Charles M Tony, husband of the victim, were wounded during the opening of a new motel. Police investigated with no charges filed.
Arvin California AP reports stuntman Rod Pack jumped from a plane at 11600 feet without a parachute. A fellow skydiver handed him a chute midair. he pulled the ripcord and landed in a plowed field. Pack says the stunt aids his career and photographers captured the moment.
