Washington reports the Kremlin sent a note to London and Paris and Washington on Western proposals for a Big Four conference. Officials called it another propaganda item with limited prospects for fruitful talks while leaving room for high level discussions.
Congress sent to President Truman a bill allowing railroad unions to demand union membership within 60 days and to collect dues by payroll deduction. It ends the Railway Labor Act ban on the union shop and check-off, aligning with Taft Hartley standards and opening organizing to about 250,000 ununionized rail workers.
An unattended engine left London Palace Gate station at 8 miles per hour pulling a carriage full of unaware passengers. Foreman George Buckland rode the engine to halt it at the platform center after a four mile solo journey. Officials launched an investigation into the incident.
The Associated Press reports at least 380 people died violently during the nation's New Year holiday period. Traffic fatalities numbered 264 and miscellaneous 116. Texas led in traffic deaths with three, while two California airplane crashes caused nine deaths. Maryland saw five fatalities in a single accident. Weather was generally favorable for driving.
