The Nov 20 death of J J Welch er from Memphis remains officially unsolved as Texas and Oklahoma clash over jurisdiction. Autopsy cites a fatal brain injury from a back of head impact, with no external bleeding. Witnesses offered lie detector tests, but neither state pursued them.
Across Times Square and Piccadilly Circus to Red Square, leaders share cautious optimism for peace as 1942 begins. President Kennedy in Florida sends wishes for freedom and success. Khrushchev conveys personal good will to Kennedy and the American people.

Five Dumas residents suffered serious injuries when a late model car rear ended a moving van on NE 8th Sunday night. Driver Clarence Walls, 23, remained at the scene with Woodrow Lewis 22 Nelda Lewis 22 Bill Sickee 22 and Carol Williams 19 listed in serious condition at Northwest Texas Hospital. van driver William F Ball 32 of Puyallup Wash said he was starting to move after leaving a truck stop when the impact occurred.
Soviet Premier Khrushchev ignored East German leader Ulbricht's plea to sign a separate German peace treaty. The New Year message to East German officials came as U S soldiers enforced a travel ban in Berlin and West German leaders urged removal of the anti refugee wall. Khrushchev extended the deadline for a pact, signaling no immediate accord for 1962.

Four Latin American teenagers engaged in a spree of burglaries across Swisher and surrounding counties.
