Cpl. Claude J. Batchelor, one of 22 American prisoners who chose communism over repatriation, asked to return to the U.S. side at 1 AM. He will be handed to UN command at 3 PM. Batchelor, 24, from Kermit, Texas, is married to Japanese wife Kyoko Araki. They wed in a Shinto shrine five years ago. Batchelor was captured in May 1951 after serving with the 1st Cavalry. His move follows prior AP reports and remarks from photographer Frank Noel. The incident follows other wartime notes from Dallas about Texas department store Christmas week sales.

Incumbents re seeking re election include Ben Smith district court clerk Sheriff Paul Gaither and district attorney A J Robinson with Smith announcing on New Year’s Day.

In Houston four men including a 13 year old bank employee faced felony theft charges after a $57,329 robbery at Houston National Bank. Donny Norris Allen signed a confession after ten hours of questioning. Suspects James David Mitchell Johnny Gonzales Navarro Nick Mitchell were sought. Navarro was later arrested.
Banks and city county state and federal offices will be closed today but groceries and downtown stores remain open. All will reopen at regular time tomorrow.
A 2-year-old boy at a First Baptist Church watch night service became stuck with his head behind a piano leg in the nursery. After failed attempts to free him, a saw was used to cut the leg and release him. The accident was ruled a freak event with no lasting injuries reported.
Heat and drought dominated Amarillo in 1953, setting a 62 year record through extreme temperatures and scant moisture. May started a long heat wave with 59 days above 90, peaking at 108, while rainfall remained minimal until mid July when storms finally brought relief across the Panhandle.
