Amarillo officers report a youth confessed to hijacking a school vehicle in a 1937 incident as the city rang in the new year quietly. Crowds filled downtown with holiday lights as many stayed home or attended late matinees to greet 1937.
In Nocona Texas today two welders died instantly and a third died later after a welding torch blast on a gun barrel tank at the Continental Oil base. Victims were ER R Crow of Wichita Falls Kenneth S Deeds 33 of Nocona and Roy Jones 36 of a Continental camp ten miles north. The explosion shattered the tank and caused fatal injuries. Crow and Deeds were mutilated and Jones died shortly after at a local burial site was prepared for Crow’s body uncertain.
Fascist chief Francisco Franco would receive strong reinforcements by mid January to aid his drive against Madrid state leaders said last night. With months likely before conquest of all Spain, many predicted Madrid would fall soon with help from troops from another European nation. Once reinforcements are ready, Franco's allies anticipate a furious offensive to end the war by spring and end the bloodshed.
Tom Moore nineteen of New Orleans admitted hijacking and beating Elbert F King an Amarillo school principal. He was jailed in Canyon charged with robbery with firearms and assault with intent to murder. Moore was arrested in Kansas after seeking medical aid and led officers to hidden gun and watch from King.
Capt. Lee Miller of the Texas Highway Patrol said a new lead had been brought to attention as investigators continued the case of Feaster Shaw 39 of Calhoun Falls South Carolina found in his automobile with a shotgun wound near Arlington Downs. Shaw said two hitch-hikers abducted him from his home Christmas Day robbed him of 600 dollars and shot him near the race track before escaping on foot.
Three gunmen burst into Gulf Refining Co offices in San Antonio early today bound clerk C. C. Miller with wire and dynamited two safes, stealing about $500.

Avila dispatches claimed ferocious dogs loosed by Socialist militiamen attacked Fascist troops near Villa Verde, later driven back by insurgents.
Vatican City reports the Pope's clogged vein in the left leg cleared and local circulation restored. Despite this small sign of relief, his general circulatory state remains critical with clots in the bloodstream that could cause death at any moment. The pope's groans eased and he was noted as more cheerful during the night.
The United Auto Workers renewed demands for a conference with General Motors officials as GM closed plants for a New Year holiday with 30 000 idle due to strikes. Homer Martin asked executive VP William Knudsen to meet and negotiate a fair permanent settlement. Three Amarillo youths and Southern Methodist University students escaped injury after their automobile overturned in a collision with a truck near Memphis. Johnnie Stidger Clifford Matthews and Henry Blackburn Jr were en route to Dallas after a holiday visit. Blackburn was believed to be driving. Stidger and Matthews played on the SMU football team and were stars of a 1934 Amarillo high school state championship team.
Albert J Kobler aged 60 died in New York after a five day influenza illness. He was a former publisher of the New York Mirror and a close friend of the late Arthur Brisbane.
Rose Bowl game listed for Pasadena California at 3 56 P M with both events noted on KGNC today indicating major college football matchups in New Orleans and Pasadena with times listed.
Julian Levy longtime Amarillo merchant and Panhandle pioneer dies of a heart attack in Mineral Wells after pneumonia and a cold. He planned to return to Amarillo soon for a Monday service at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home with arrangements pending.
Potter County officials sworn in for the next two years bring L. D. Heyser as county treasurer replacing Hubert G. Cole. Dr. H. W. Duke becomes justice of the peace precinct one place one, and W. L. Ottinger takes over as constable from Mrs. J. Walker Hunter. Three new commissioners include Low Sellars in Precinct 1, John Winters in Precinct 3, and Dan Payillard in Precinct 4 replacing Percy Gibbs.
Reports from Seattle and Tacoma papers say Dr W W Mattson contacted the kidnapper holding his seven year old son Charles for a $28000 ransom and that a payoff was to be arranged. The News Tribune claims a connection between family and abductor has been established while officials keep silent on payment.

Temperature readings from yesterday are unclear with garbled data. expected highs near 46 and lows around 28 are uncertain due to incomplete records.
United Press survey shows Americans spent lavishly to greet 1926 with high holiday spending. New York led with about 10 million dollars in hotels clubs and homes, followed by Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and Hollywood. Rose Bowl and other football events drew crowds in Los Angeles Dallas and New Orleans as hotels and private rooms filled and cover charges rose.
