In a major property litigation, a suit seeks recovery of oil lands valued at about 50 million dollars tied to a 16 million building project. Early returns show a large plurality for bond defeats in three panhandle counties. Lee Highway paving backers hold a 1,699 vote lead.
Defeat was conceded for a 1.7 million dollar road bond plan to pave the Lee highway in Hale Floyd and Motley counties. Hale county voted 1 085 for 682 against while Motley tallied 454 for 246 against and Floyd 1 010 for 676 against. Gray county’s 1 2000 bond issue for Postal Fort Elliott roads and the Southwest Trail was still in doubt with 260 for 149 against from three precincts and Pampa 166 for 102 against.
Seven year old Elsie Johnson of 901 North Fillmore was seriously injured when struck by a car on the North highway beyond Johnson Drug Store No 2. She remained unconscious in St Anthony's hospital with critical condition as details were sparse. The driver stayed to aid and the girl had briefly rode in a car before stepping into the highway and being hit by a vehicle bound for Amarillo.

Chicago dispatch reports James Gricius and Thomas McWane were executed for the July Cicero triple murder to rob three victims. Gricius refused shoes and family farewells, while McWane watched the hangman and asked to speak before death. Both had pleaded guilty and were sentenced to death.
The photograph shows George Hassell, accused killer of an 18 year old, with his wife beside the Hassell residence near Farwell. Investigators report the dugout nearby was where Hassell confessed to burying his wife and eight stepchildren after killing them.
Special to The News. George Hassell, confessed slayer moved from Farwell after mob threats, spoke Friday in Plainview jail. He says he seeks the electric chair, not a long sentence, and that he hopes to survive his injuries and be ready for execution. He told Dr Cantrell and Deputy Will Poer he now thinks he will live and endure the ordeal.
City health officer Dr. M. N. Fuller warns of possible smallpox spread with two deaths reported and 17 cases under quarantine. Officials urge vaccination for all unvaccinated in the last three years, especially before schools reopen after Christmas.
The Amarillo building tally for 1926 reached 16,417,079 dollars with 2,934 permits, signaling continued growth and predicting Amarillo as a leading Texas city. Ground has been broken for the million dollar Senator Medical Arts building at Eighth and Polk, with other large projects foreseen in 1927.
