U S Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison says the troubled V-22 Osprey will survive current scrutiny. She met reporters at the Potter County Courthouse and discussed Marine crashes, the Bell Helicopter Amarillo plant, and ongoing inquiries led by a panel after two fatal incidents. Hutchison plans to brief Amarillo leaders and considers the issue one of her top priorities. She also touched on tax cuts and marriage penalty reforms, and she declined to discuss a possible Texas governor bid.
Randall County Judge Ted Wood voided several votes from Tuesday’s county commissioners meeting citing possible Open Meetings Act issues. Commissioners defended the actions while vowing to add future items to the agenda, including rural fire departments, the 7th Court of Appeals, and a change in meeting times.
Volunteers brought planes and helicopters to Hutchinson County to search for Gene and Robbie Webb after their Robinson B-22 helicopter vanished. The Civil Air Patrol, a congressionally chartered civilian auxiliary of the Air Force, coordinates with the Rescue Coordination Center in Langley to mobilize missions. Agencies including DPS, law enforcement, National Parks Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Salvation Army, and Red Cross joined the effort. Cadets and staff filled roles as air crew, observers, scanners, and ground support as the mission expanded Saturday and Sunday, with duty sharing and communications teams coordinating ground resources.
Investigators say the USS Greeneville crew detected the surface vessel Ehime Maru 71 minutes before the collision that sank the Japanese fishing trawler. A sonar plotter claimed his work paused due to civilians in the control room, while the Navy delays a court of inquiry to allow the three top officers to prepare. The case could advance to courts martial or another step, to be decided by Adm. Thomas Fargo.
The FBI alleges the Virginia woods were used as dead drop sites by agent Robert Hanssen in a 15 year spy case. Parks along Fairfax County were code named An Bob Charlie Doris Ellis Flo and others with notes on leaving classified material. Hanssen complained about mud and heat while his actions spanned across two homes in 1981 onward.
