White House Shooting Standoff Near Bush

A middle aged accountant with mental illness fired shots outside the White House Wednesday and was shot by Secret Service while waving a handgun near the South Lawn. Robert W. Pickett, 47, from Evansville Indiana, wounded in the knee and hospitalized, had been fired by the IRS in the mid 1980s and feared West Point after a 1972 semester. Bush was in the White House exercising and not in danger.

Enigmatic Indiana accountant shot outside White House

Robert Pickett a 47 year old Evansville tax accountant with a history of mental illness and a West Point dropout shot outside the White House after brandishing a handgun. He had previously sued the IRS over his firing and alleged persecution by government offices dating back to West Point. He attempted suicide in 1987 amid IRS job troubles and Cadet betrayal claims.

Dale Evans Dies at 88 in California Desert Home

Dale Evans, famed singer actress who partnered with Roy Rogers in films and TV, died at 88 of congestive heart failure at her Apple Valley home. Born Frances Octavia Smith in 1912, she and Rogers starred in 35 movies and several TV shows, with their theme "Happy Trails to You" and her horse Buttermilk becoming iconic symbols of the western era.

Amarillo to start Coulter Street rehab earlier than planned

TxDOT notified Amarillo that the Coulter Street rehabilitation will be funded from a 2005 allocation, allowing a spring 2002 start. The project, previously delayed by funding gaps, will use about half of the anticipated urban mobility funds, with Borger slated for remaining allocation.
