Plane Saves 12 From Ice In Greenland Rescue

Twelve US airmen stranded on a 7800 foot Greenland ice cap were rescued in 38 minutes by a C-47 with jet assist and skis. Led by Lt. Col. Emil J. Beaudry the team were flown to Billie West Eighth base in northwest Greenland where they rested. Five rescued men have families nearby and may return to the US. The Navy aided with helicopters aboard USS Saipan but the Air Force led the mission. Beaudry previously rescued nine others in Labrador last year.

Strong Winds Hit Panhandle and Dust Laden Skies

Strong winds and heavy dust swept the Panhandle and South Plains with areas around Boise City Texhoma Littlefield Levelland Lubbock facing reduced visibility. An Amarillo plane rollover occurred in gusts of 39 mph. Cold air settled with forecasts calling for lows near 21 in Amarillo and mid 20s to 30s elsewhere as a northwest wind waned after a late day storm.

Sleet Ice Storm Paralyzes Nebraska Roads

A fast moving sleet and ice storm cut roads and communication across Nebraska from McCook to O Neill with 40 to 50 mph winds. Northwestern Bell reported 314 breaks isolating 46 towns and Kearney lost power. The Weather Bureau pegged the storm near northern Missouri moving eastward, expected to exit tomorrow with temperatures in the twenties.

Plane crash kills six near Willow Run airport

Detroit Dec 28 A Michigan National Guard plane carrying four crewmen and possibly two civilian passengers crashed about three miles west of Willow Run airport, killing all aboard. The accident occurred tonight and authorities reported total loss of life.

Jerry Alderson the seven year old boy from Lubbock brought to Dallas for a brain tumor diagnosis was reported to be doing satisfactorily. An attending physician said a test this morning showed a normal reaction and the boy would be kept under observation.

VA to Begin GI Insurance Dividends in 1949
