The EPA weighs a proposal to require 78 cities to replace sand filters with activated carbon in drinking water plants to cut cancer causing chemicals. Initial costs are estimated at 291 to 685 million dollars with annual operations of 34 to 92 million. Public hearings will follow the formal proposal.
Amarillo water reclamation chief Clarence Scherer says the EPA plan to switch 78 cities to activated carbon filters is premature. He notes no definition of cancer causing toxins exists, cites Lake Meredith water as safe, and questions if Amarillo is targeted, while other agencies study trihalomethanes.
Police report a Missouri kidnapping in which a woman was tied and blindfolded for about 37 hours. The suspects demanded 25000 in small bills. the note was found in an abandoned car in Sturgeon. No one has been charged, and authorities kept the suspect unnamed.
