He warned failure would let Russia surpass the US in science as the 124th annual AAAS convocation opened in Indianapolis. The meeting features over 1,000 papers on topics from space travel to animal studies.
A 650 member strike by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers against Atchison Topeka Santa Fe coast lines is set for January 4. The union cites antiquated working conditions and notes earlier mediation blocked other walkouts. Coast lines operate from Amarillo Texas to San Francisco with HQ in Chicago.
Houston police chief F E Shipp called the shooting of 15 year old Jay Evans a useless killing. Evans was killed in front of his home in an exclusive area while with three 19 year olds and another man in a car. A white car stopped, its lights on and engine running before Evans was shot.
Weather readings show Amarillo enjoying clear to partly cloudy skies with 318 of 360 days sunlit in 1957. Reports at 3 p.m. Thursday list conditions across Houston Oklahoma City and Amarillo with winds around 6 to 15 mph and variable visibility.
In Littlefield at 4 20 p m two cars crashed on Farm Road 1073 killing Mrs H K Currie 55 and her daughter Mrs W A Smith 31. Three others were hospitalized including Mrs Dorothy Grubbs and Sgt Wesley Smith husband of Currie plus Henry Cheatham 45 of Lubbock. Funeral plans were pending for Currie and Smith with local funeral homes handling arrangements.
The African-Asian conference opened with strong anti US rhetoric and calls for an immediate unconditional ban on nuclear tests. Delegates include ministers and exiles from 38 nations, led by Egypt's Nasser while leftist and Communist-leaning participants urge disarmament and neutrality.

Howard Minker received permission to possess and care for his mockingbird Mockie for six more months. The extension to permit 2068 was issued after Wildlife Service approval in Atlanta, avoiding jeopardy to the bird until June 30.
Sam Hanks, the Indy 500 winner, said he could not stop in time and struck a car while driving the pace car for the Memorial Day race. No injuries were reported. the front of Hanks’s pace car was crumpled. He had criticized car brakes in a recent speech.
At 6 30 p m the Fire Department sent one unit to the W Eighth Avenue overpass to tackle a grass fire with no damage reported.
