Second Amarillo Victim Dies
Two Amarillo men died and another remained in critical condition after holiday traffic accidents in and near Amarillo. Elvin Ramsey Proper, 28, died at a local hospital from chest and internal injuries after a crash on the highway north of Amarillo near Thompson Pool early Sunday morning. B. R. Hooks, a pioneer Amarillo carpenter, was killed Christmas Eve crossing near Northwest Texas Hospital. Carl W. Cox, driver of the striking car, was released on $2,500 bond after being charged with murder without malice. Joe Getzwiller, injured in a taxi collision at Van Buren Street and Sixth Avenue, suffered a broken wrist, broken arm, skull fracture, and multiple injuries.

Rev Hugh M Smith aged 70, a retired Southern Presbyterian pastor, died after brief illness in an Amarillo hospital. He served in McLean Portales and many Texas towns, lived in Amarillo 17 years, and will be buried in Abilene. Survivors include wife and four sons, plus a brother and sister. Funeral at Ellwood Church at 4 pm with burial to follow in Abilene.
