Clinton’s 1992 DC visit signals hope for voting rights
After a stroll through a struggling DC neighborhood, President-elect Clinton vowed to stay in touch with the city and backed a symbolic Taxation Without Representation license plate. Experts say his efforts fell short of big reform, though DC finances improved and redevelopment progressed.

Miner to pay 30 million settlement over Summitville mine disaster
Canadian businessman Robert Friedland agreed to pay 30 million to settle Colorado’s cleanup lawsuit over the 1992 Summitville cyanide spill that killed life along the Alamosa River. Attorney General Salazar called the deal a major environmental victory, with funds to aid spill victims and restore the watershed. The case, tied to mining practices and cleanup costs, ends litigation while Friedland reserves rights to pursue other claims. Environmentalists note Friedland’s history with controversial projects, but see the settlement as progress.

Man sought in shootings found dead in LA river
Gabriel Ghazelian, 49, sought for the fatal shooting of his estranged wife Zabel Ghazelian and their 13 year old daughter Garine, was found dead Friday after leaping from a freeway into the shallow Los Angeles River. Two other daughters were wounded and remained hospitalized in critical condition. Police said the suspect, who appeared at his wife's home Thursday night, pulled a handgun during a traffic stop and opened fire. The motive is not clear though few family friends point to the couple’s separation.
