Amarl looms fire claims ten in convalescent home

Fire at the convalescent home killed ten residents including Mrs. Margaret Baer 765 Amarillo and Mrs. Tom Dennis 75 Memphis. Officials said ambulances moved patients to St Anthony's Hospital while Mrs. J W Wright escaped with burns. She described hearing a patient call for a match as smoke and heat filled the hall. The cause remained undetermined with explosions suspected as windows blew out.

Man Killed and 3 Hurt In Highway Wreck West of Pullman

A two car crash on Highway 66 near Pullman left one man dead and three others seriously injured. Denis Schmiedeke, 21, of Ann Arbor Michigan, faces negligent homicide charges after his Cadillac rear ended a Ford driven by Herman Griffin, sending it off the road and rolling. The deceased is Harry Marshall Dunaway, 65, of Avondale. Survivors include two daughters and a brother. The Michigan students were en route to California. the Amarillo group returned from Oklahoma business. Authorities describe high speed passing as the crash cause. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Gen Walton H Walker Dies In Korean Crash

Lt Gen Walton H Walker commander of the US Eighth Army in Korea was killed when his jeep collided with a truck north of Seoul. The 61 year old veteran died after being rushed to a field ambulance. His death comes 20 days after his birthday and follows the missing Maj Gen William F Dean in the Korean conflict.
