White Christmas Odds Stated From Weather Bureau Analysis

Crime index shows 1970 rise nationwide and in Amarillo

J Edgar Hoover's latest crime index reports a 10 percent national rise for the first nine months of 1970 with suburban areas up 14 percent. In Amarillo, murder robbery burglary larceny and car theft up while rape and aggravated assault down.

Court Rules Khiva Temple Must Pay Property Taxes

The Amarillo 1946 tax exemption resolution for the Khiva Temple at 5th and Fillmore was ruled of no force. The 7th Court of Civil Appeals upheld Jim Nugent’s July 1968 tax roll addition, stating the city commission cannot grant exemption and the court must determine status once assessed nonexempt.

Potter County to Cut Salaries Under New State Law

Court okays 18 year olds to vote in federal elections

The Supreme Court struck down state age rules for nonfederal voting but upheld an 18 year old threshold for presidential, Senate, and House elections. Five justices allowed the federal standard to apply to federal races while four dissented. The decision opens federal elections to an estimated 11 million youths under 21.
