The death of Louis Washkansky, who received the world’s first successful heart transplant, was attributed to pneumonia. The surgeon who performed the operation said he would not hesitate to undertake another such procedure, already planned.
A Yugoslav first grade reader features Marshal Tito in photos and poems, promoting Tito’s cult of personality through stories of Vlado and Dara joining Pioneers and praising “Comrade Tito.” Critics warn it indoctrinates youth. a pull for McGuffey-style schooling is urged.
President Johnson joined 25 allied leaders in a noon memorial at St Pauls Cathedral for Harold Holt the Australian prime minister missing since the surf incident. The memorial drew a historic gathering of dignitaries including Prince Charles and premiers and presidents from anti communist states as Johnson held talks with allies and pledged continued US support for Australia.

A federal grand jury indicted six men for conspiring to cheat card players at the Friars Club in Beverly Hills. Testimony from Tony Martin Zeppo Marx and Phil Silvers described large losses and a scheme using peep holes and an attic radio to relay game information. The 25 count indictment follows a 22 week inquiry with over 100 witnesses and losses reportedly exceeding 1 million dollars. Warrants set bond at 5000 dollars. the six named defendants include Maurice H Friedman Manuel Ricky Jacobs Victor G Sands T Warner Richardson Johnny Rosselli.
Viet Cong apparently set an explosive that punched a seven foot hole in the Seatrain Texas, an 8108 ton American cargo ship, while at anchor near Nha Be, southeast of Saigon. Navy and Army tugs stood by as the crew controlled flooding. the channel remained clear. Military air strikes hit targets near the DMZ and Cambodian border as B52s and fighter planes pounced on Communist concentrations.
