The Interstate Commerce Commission urged safety first in train operation in its twenty sixth annual report to Congress. It notes 8215 derailments in the year with 1877 from bad track and 3847 from defective equipment and cites insufficient speed controls and decayed ties as key danger factors.
In Ashtabula Ohio six people were killed and three injured when a Lake Shore train on the Ashtabula Rapid Transit line collided with a car at a grade crossing tonight.

A dinner with nearly a dozen Democrats produced a general understanding for reorganization in line with President elect Wilson. Indianapolis, Dec 16 A trial of forty one men charged with complicity in the McNamara dynamite plots nears its end after nearly three months. Thirty one defendants have testified denying illegal transportation of explosives. Judge Anderson will extend sitting hours and Christmas day session is anticipated. About two weeks remain for closing arguments and rebuttal testimony.

In Santa Anna California a tramp who killed Undersheriff Squires and wounded three deputies last night was killed by the posse this afternoon. The body was riddled with bullets after a long standoff. The assailant had brutalized 14 year old Myrtle Hunn on a nearby ranch before fleeing.
Los Angeles report says efforts by land and sea failed to locate wreckage of the hydro aeroplane flight to San Francisco. Authorities conclude the aircraft likely plunged to the Pacific bottom from a great height. Roy Knabenshue stays hopeful that Horace Keaney or Chester Lawrence survived.
Kenosha Wisconsin December 16 Packey McFarland of Chicago defeated Eddie Murphy of Boston in ten rounds. Murphy lost two teeth and was knocked down in the final round. McFarland lacked a knockout punch but earned the decision.
In St. Louis on December 16 representatives of the Southern lumber industry urged the Interstate Commerce Commission to block a general 1 cent per hundred pounds increase in freight rates on hardwood lumber shipments from the South to Canada.
Government wins partial victory in hard coal case. Court sustains Temple Coal and Iron ruling but refuses to find a general conspiracy. Suit began in 1907 targeting Reading Company and major railroads including Philadelphia & Reading and Lehigh Valley with 32 independent operators.
London December 16 preliminaries of the peace conference were completed today with the armistice issue between Greece and Turkey resolved and negotiations set to start tomorrow. Balkan Allies versus Turkey claims diverge and no early end to talks is foreseen. The day saw the first Greek Turkish fleet engagement, causing no serious damage.

Secretary Charles Nagel in his Taft annual report opposes endowing a federal commissions with broad powers to fix prices or regulate big business. He urges strictly defined authority limited to oversight and self regulation, with automatic corporate reports and a possible role for a bureau of corporations in reorganizations. He also backs life safety at sea and seacoast wireless questions, a railroad labor arbitration board, and other reform proposals.
