New York December 15 An espionage era grand jury indicted former State Department official Alger Hiss on two counts of perjury over claims he and his wife Priscilla yielded State Department papers to Whittaker Chambers. If convicted Hiss faces up to five years per count and a $2,000 fine per count. US Attorney McCloskey expected Hiss to surrender, arraignment possibly tomorrow or Friday.
Representative Nixon of California says the Hiss indictment vindicates the Un-American Activities Committee while Rankin of Mississippi agrees but cautions the panel will continue its investigation. Nixon notes Chambers testified to multiple State Department sources.
Last day of the duck and goose hunting season in Amarillo, with possession limits allowing hunters to retain ducks and geese for 90 days after the close. Noon calendar items include Kiwanis Youth Center meeting, Lions Club at Herring Hotel, Optimists at Blue Mirror Room, and Rotary at Herring Hotel. At 7:30 PM AHS Aeolian Choir Christmas Carol program raises funds for the Children's Home. 8:15 PM events include Adult Game Night at the San Jacinto Youth Center and a World Championship wrestling match LeRoy McGuirk versus Dick Trout.
Orla L. Brinkley, charged with beating his baby stepson to death, was not at home from 3 30 to 6 30 o clock Aug 30, according to defense witnesses in 47th District Court. Grocer Albert Ruffin testified Brinkley and his mother worked for him until 6 30 that evening. He said Brinkley never left the premises and denied mistreating the child. Mrs. Marvin Wellman and Ruby Keesee testified Brinkleys were at the store or nearby during the period and described the child s beating as witnessed by Mrs. Keesee, who heard it from her kitchen. The autopsy by Dr. T P Churchill attributed death to brain hemorrhage with injuries from violence, not a fall.
Amarillo bus drivers voted yesterday to decline a graduated vacation clause in the contract they are negotiating with the Amarillo Bus Company. About 75 operators at Iron Workers Hall decided to stand pat while wage increase talks progress.

The Railroad Commission ordered Texas crude oil allowable production for January reduced by about 250,985 barrels daily to a maximum of 2,466,034 barrels. Chairman Ernest O. Thompson said the cut was necessary because the oil cannot be used. All fields except East Texas and Foster Field were to cease operation four days to meet the target, while East Texas kept a 20 day schedule with no reduction. Foster Field remained at the December level after prior cuts.

Mal S. Daugherty, 68, former Washington Court House banker and Midland Bank president, who defied a Senate subpoena during the Teapot Dome era and later faced 58 counts of embezzlement, died in Ohio. His flight from justice and the bank’s collapse left the town resentful as it faced bankruptcy and a loss of trust.
