Six inmates at the South Carolina state penitentiary stabbed Captain Olin Sanders to death and barricaded the office. National guardsmen fired tear gas, forcing surrender as Sanders died in a hospital shortly after.

Stormy seas delayed relief as American destroyers Barker and Alden reached Hoishoto Island off Formosan east coast to aid the Presi dent Hoover passengers. About 380 to 400 people aboard the luxury liner were stranded after running onto rocks Saturday and the ship was reported leaking badly.
The U S Gunboat Panay was bombed and sunk in the Yangtze near Nanking. American casualties included one dead and several wounded among officers and crew. British gunboats Bee and Ladybird were also damaged with a British seaman killed. Survivors were rescued by nearby ships as officials sought facts and responsibility.
In Amarillo the Panhandle VFW and 250 veterans and wives gathered at the American Legion hall to hear Judge E C Nelson describe Flanders Field and warn of looming danger as U S gunboat sinks on the Fangize River in China. A veteran said if needed they would strike back, echoing fears since the Sino Japanese crisis. The Buffalo convention urged avoiding foreign entanglements and the group weighed a repeat of World War involvement. News of the gunboat sinking arrived during the discussion.
Insurgent forces in Spain launched a broad offensive hitting the Toledo Brunete and Teruel fronts. Government lines reportedly collapsed as the Red defense proved unable to resist the attack. Air battles over Zaragoza involved hundreds of planes with heavy losses on both sides.
