President Truman and Madame Chiang Kai-shek held a teacup conference at Blair House that could shape U S aid to China. Officials cautioned few offers were expected, though a serious study of the Chinese problem was promised.
Dispatches from Nanking report mixed views on China’s Nationalist troops fighting alongside anti Communist nations and lingering doubts among U S advisers about Chiang Kai-shek's leadership as his forces struggle near the capital.
Reported Communist attacks near Nanking threaten the last line of defense as General Chiang extended martial law across China. Chinese authorities say Madame Chiang seeks three billion dollars in U S aid over three years. An American declaration of support for Chiang and arms shipments accompanies talk of a major U S military mission to direct the war.
Paris December 10 AP United Nations approves first world declaration of human rights proclaiming freedom and equality for all. The 58 nation assembly votes 48 to 0 with eight abstentions, defeating Soviet attempts to delay. Vishinsky accuses the West, cites Munich and Daladier, Chamberlain, and U S Britain and France.
Two white men, William L. Howell and Roderick Clifton, were indicted on murder charges for the ambush slaying of Robert Mallard in Toombs County Georgia. A special grand jury heard testimony from Mallard’s widow and others and set trial for January 11. James Spivey was released.
The Weather Bureau forecast for Amarillo and vicinity and Wes Texas calls for partly cloudy days with a bit warmer Saturday and cooler Sunday. The Panhandle remains partly cloudy and warmer Saturday, cooler Sunday. Temperatures will average 2 to 4 degrees below normal with normal highs 54 to 61 and lows 26 to 34. Warmer Friday night with little change until cooler Monday night and no significant precipitation expected.
Today events in Amarillo include Navy ROTC examinations at Amarillo College starting 8:45 AM. At 10 AM Jack McElroy headlines Breakfast in Hollywood at Paramount Theater, broadcast 11 to 11:30 AM on KFDA, followed by an open house for Summit School students at San Jacinto Youth Center 609 Carolina, Earl Fischer overseeing. Evening features a 9 PM Christmas dance at Herring Hotel with Amarillo Reserve Officers Association and Coond his orchestra.
James D. Word Woodrow Watkins and Shirley Sandage go on trial at Carpenters Hall at 10 this morning. They are accused of violating United Brotherhood rules and have been suspended pending a five member jury trial. The case could influence whether county work on the livestock exhibition building stays union or goes non union.
Misdemeanor charges of aggravated assault against Earl O D Jackson Amarillo carpenter were dismissed by County Judge Gene Jordan after County Attorney John Peterson urged dismissal for insufficient evidence. Jackson had been charged with assault with intent to murder in the November 22 shooting of Peck Valentine in a North Philadelphia trailer house. the count was reduced to a misdemeanor by a Potter County grand jury. Jackson remains at Northwest Texas Hospital maintaining the shooting was an accident.
Jack McElroy of Bride and Groom and Breakfast in Hollywood arrives in Amarillo after weather nearly delayed his trip. He will appear at Truitt Buick from 8:30 to 10 and 1 to 6 today and tomorrow, with a Breakfast in Hollywood show at Paramount Theater starting at 10. The KFDA broadcast runs 11 to 11:30.
Skies over the North and South Plains turned pink as strong southerly winds lifted dry topsoil. Weather observer T. F. Bates noted dust from Lubbock to Garden City, Kansas, with Amarillo winds up to 49 mph and gusts near 60 mph. Temperatures ranged from 23 to 51 degrees, with night lows around 31.
John K. Boyce of Amarillo was elected president of the Tri-State Fair at a directors meeting. Delbert Dalby was re elected vice president and Rex Baxter was re elected secretary treasurer. A $48,155.54 surplus was disclosed, with a $40,000 contingency reserve approved. The board also discontinued the Palomino horse show and the All Girl Rodeo.
Representatives of the Amarillo Bus Company and the bus drivers local failed to agree at Iron Workers Hall. The drivers sought a five to ten cent hourly raise with adjusted vacation, time and a half for overtime, and higher fares for the public, while the company pressed for fare increases and limited vacation gains.
A humorous poem excerpt and a report describe a Milwaukee woman calling her marriage a hash in court. The piece shifts to a New York grand jury hearing about the so called pumpkin papers secreted for a decade in a Brooklyn house. Nathan L Levine testifies about Chambers delivering a risky parcel amid fear of communists.
Guards captured two convicts at Washington state prison after a six day tunnel effort one day from freedom. Victims Harry Callas of King County serving 10 years for robbery and Amada Cadena of Yakima County serving life for first degree murder were caught when guards pierced the tunnel.
Harper Lee Williams of Altus Oklahoma, 33, suffered facial and head cuts when the taxi he rode in collided with a westbound Santa Fe freight train at the North East Third Grand crossing about 7 30. Driver John Wheat escaped injury. Williams was taken to St Anthony's Hospital in a Blackburn Shaw ambulance and was rest ing well later that night.
The National Labor Relations Board announced a union election at Willborn Brothers Company Inc to decide if workers want to remain represented by Local 531 of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Iron Shipbuilders and Helpers of America AFL. Eligible employees in production and maintenance in tank departments will vote within 30 days after December 8.

Nearly 300 members of the Natural Gasoline Association of America gathered for talks on industry vital topics. The evening featured a Smorgasbord dinner in the Crystal Ballroom with toastmaster J. H. Dunn and performances by Nile Noble Orchestra and Amarillo acts. Mayors and officials warned of a boom and urged prudent planning as Brig. Gen. Ernest O. Thompson outlined continued gas conservation efforts and a January hearing to stop gas wastage in 25 Texas oil fields.
Louis Bob Conley of Amarillo Texas faces two federal indictments one to be dismissed on a US attorney recommendation. He also battles state charges of assaults on his wife Lucille and mother in law LaCroix and two counts of kidnapping. A separate federal indictment accuses unlawful flight to avoid prosecution for an assault on Bertha LaCroix.
