London reports renewed alarm over King George's health as a lingering infection resurfaces. Four physicians again consult as the heart bears the strain from a three week battle, with fever continuing though lung signs show some improvement.
Special to The News Tulia Texas December 10 The district court will pass the normal sentence today on Robert Blake former Amarillo high school student found guilty months ago of killing Fred Conner Tulia automobile dealer. Blake was given the death penalty and will be sentenced at 1 o'clock this afternoon.
Tuesday partly cloudy for Amarillo and vicinity with unsettled conditions across West Texas. A broad low pressure area lingers over eastern New Mexico, with a general rise in temperatures except in the upper Mississippi valley. Expect partly cloudy skies as pressure eases slightly, and note yesterday’s maximum 56 and minimum 42 with .05 inch precipitation in the last 24 hours.
Governor Moody's highway legislation committee votes to adopt two subcommittee recommendations for submission to the 41st legislature. A 20 percent cut in motor car registration fees is proposed, with fees weight based and horsepower abolished. Proposals include extra charges and a revised fund split favoring a state highway maintenance pot, raising county retention limits to 150000 dollars.
Dan Moody the Texas governor roped his first wildcat near Laredo after it was released by hunting dogs on the K. S. Sterling ranch. Sheriff Luther Snow of Raymondville, famed for lariat skills, said Moody dragged the animal to the ground.
Mrs Pearl Hudson 353 died after allegedly receiving two bichloride of mercury tablets on December 2 at a local hospital. In Sheridan Michigan three years after a teacher slapped him for throwing paper wads Jimmy Deakin then 15 lured Flossie Carter 29 into a country spot with a car ride and murdered her with a rock he confessed. He said the plan arose from a long simmering grudge. The confession stunned the town and was released as D Hale Brake outlined the case.
Investigation into the Wert Worth and Denver wreck continues as officials seek the cause of a collision between a fast passenger train and a freight train Friday night near Dalhart. Three people died, including engineers D W Robinson and T W Molesworth, with four others injured and hospitalized. Funeral services are planned for Engineer Robinson in Clarendon and for Engineer Molesworth in the local area.
In Missouri Columbia was closed until January 3 to halt influenza. State health officials approved the measure, saying it was the safest method to stop the outbreak. Kansas reports 1596 influenza cases in the past week. Sewanee also closes as influenza outbreak hits campus.
Washington December 10 The Senate approved the nomination of William F Whiting of Massachusetts to be Secretary of Commerce succeeding Herbert Hoover Action on the nomination was sent over until tomorrow with Chairman Jones expecting no opposition to final confirmation by the Senate
The 21000 ton liner Celtic ran aground at Roches Point near Cork during a 70 mile gale after leaving New York. 253 passengers were safely transferred to tenders amid heavy seas, as crew were also taken off and Marines watched from shore. Refloating attempts were abandoned for high tide tomorrow. the ship’s fate remains uncertain. 50 crew from the Vestris disaster were aboard.
A police officer fired into the head of a resisting man after an alleged offense involving girls, with charges listed for the case from last Saturday night. The report notes the officer’s actions and the pending accusations against the suspect.
Dallas police identified Henry Aldredge and Lee Merriman as the attackers who robbed two male companions and abducted three girls Saturday night. The two, along with Kenny Aldridge, were captured after a gun fight with officers and face charges of robbery and assault. Other loot traced to the suspects included watches found in their car as investigators close in on the crime scene near Dallas.
The Associated Press reports the murder trial of Leroy James of Los Angeles and Miss Helen Francis of Norman Oklahoma starts in Tucumcari. They face charges of first and second degree murder for the killing of Wendt Schmidt a St Louis salesman. J A Jackson testified about the rooming arrangement and the plan to threaten Schmidt for money. James and Francis were traveling together as husband and wife. The case continued after testimonies at preliminary hearings.
Santa Fe advocate James C. Cassell proposes sweeping changes to New Mexico motor vehicle code. He calls for driver examinations before licensing, periodic tests of lights brakes and steering, and abolition of state speed laws in favor of strict reckless driving standards.
