Daily Amarillo forecast notes 228 of 343 days in 1970 with partly cloudy skies and warm temps. Increasing clouds and colder air expected tonight. Thursday calls for considerable cloudiness and further cooling with a high in the mid 70s and a low around 30s. Southwest winds at 5 to 25 mph.
In Atlanta John Ehrlichman New York Mayor John Lindsay and Illinois Governor Richard Ogilvie urged Congress to approve federal revenue sharing. The leaders addressed 2,500 local officials at the National League of Cities 47th annual congress, calling the plan a hallmark of the President's new federalism.
Mrs. Nadean Spinks seeks a second recount of the Hutchinson County treasurer race after a petition to remove votes from Holt residents was dismissed. Republican challenger Mrs. June Christian led by five votes after a prior recount, and an official notice of contest has now been served to Christian, reopening the bid.
A group of 23 Panhandle delegates hosted 57 Miami beef buyers at a Costa Coral Country Club dinner in the Zaragonzano Room. Texas packers Glover, Missouri and Wilson & Company showcased Panhandle ribeye beef flown by Braniff, aiming to expand sales in Dade County's 3 600 eating places and 70 waterfront hotels and motels.
Rail union leaders pledged to strike if Congress does not act by the 12:01 a.m. Thursday deadline. Brotherhood of Railway Clerks President C. L. Dennis warned of a nationwide walkout while urging continued union unity and blaming railways for the crisis. AFL-CIO President George Meany backed the stance as Congress considers a 45 day strike embargo and negotiation efforts continue in Washington.
The Senate voted to bar the introduction of U S ground combat troops into Cambodia as part of the Defense Department appropriations, while Secretary Rogers sought 255 million in foreign aid to bolster Cambodia's army. The House must agree, and a conference will reconcile differences between the two bills. Senator Church argues the measure affirms congressional control over public funds.
The Texas Wheat Producers Association will establish a Amarillo headquarters on Jan 1 for research market development and legislative service programs. Amarillo economist Delmer G Bill Nelson will become executive vice president and administrator of programs. President Leo Witkowski of Hereford announced the changes aiming to raise income by capturing new domestic and foreign markets.
A 50-year-old Borger man Karl Wayne Cowboy Winks Jr. was killed when his tractor overturned on the Watkins ranch two miles southeast of Phillips. He was pinned beneath the vehicle and died at the scene. Funeral arrangements are by Simpson Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife Lottie a son Wayne three daughters a brother and three sisters plus one grandchild.
The House rejected the Senate's move to defund the 1 800 mph SST program and voted 213 to 174 to instruct conferees to keep the $290 million for two prototype planes. Senate conferees oppose restoration. leadership cites jobs and aerospace prestige.
The government reports wholesale prices fell one tenth of a percent in November, revised from an earlier estimate. The index dropped to 117.7, about 2.6 percent above a year ago, the second decline in over two years. Industrial prices held steady for the first time in 17 months. Living costs in October rose six tenths of a percent and were about 6 percent higher than a year earlier.
