Americans urged to donate to Red Cross for Hungarians

Citizens are asked to support Hungarians through the American Red Cross, designated relief channel for Hungary and Austrian refugee camps. Gen. Alfred Gruenther heads a nationwide drive to raise 5 million dollars, with Amarillo sharing 4000 dollars as part of the aid efforts.

Defense spending likely to rise next year says Wilson

Secretary of Defense Wilson after talks with President Eisenhower indicated defense outlays for the next fiscal year will exceed the 36 billion dollars estimated for this year. He saw no near change in the armed forces strength of 2.8 million. A $38 billion defense total for the year starting July 1 was reportedly under review, but he declined to confirm the figure.

Braniff boosts service through Amarillo with new aircraft

Airline officials report improvements in Amarillo as Braniff President Chuck Beard implements changes. Starting next Monday Flight 57 will use a DC on the Houston to Dallas non stop route, offering a first class round trip via Houston and Denver with stops in Dallas and Amarillo. Flight 53 will replace its DC 3 with a Convair 440 on the Dallas route. TWA schedule tweaks are also noted, highlighting Amarillo's growing role as a commercial aviation center.

Christmas Parade Opens Amarillo Season

The Christmas season starts in Amarillo with a 10 a.m. parade down Polk Street featuring Santa Claus, nine floats, eight bands, and the Marine Corps Reserve Color Guard led by Miss Amarillo Myrna McDaniel. Whiteard Trial Set for January 21 in Wheeler County

Judge Lewis Goodrich set January 21 1957 for the murder and attempted murder trial of James Whiteard 20 held in Gray County jail after capture east of Shamrock. A special venire of 120 jurors will start December 12 in the 31st District Court Wheeler. Whiteard faces two murder charges and two counts of attempted murder and may receive a court appointed attorney.
