In Amarillo Judge W M Taylor Jr of Dallas schedules a 10 a m December 21 hearing on a request to resume the federal court order requiring Pantex plant officials to provide employees with underwear socks and other wearing apparel.

Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller confirmed reports of a planned attempt on his life. He said the threat was the first serious one since taking office in January and that the FBI cautioned against overreacting. Authorities in Texas and Arkansas were mum on the San Angelo suspect linked to the plot.
The Arkansas Supreme Court ordered the release of State Police Director Lynn A. Davis who was jailed for contempt after refusing to name a confidential informant. The court stayed bond pending review and instructed the Pulaski County record be sent for appeal. Davis had resisted naming the informant tied to Sept 9 gambling raids in Hot Springs.
In Pensacola Beach, Florida, a deaf man handed a card claiming he is a deaf mute to speech therapist Carol Wedel. She identified herself and offered money, but the man turned away and did not accept.
Police still review incoming tips in a none too clear homicide case. A cafe waitress identified a man from a photo while officers questioned the suspect who reportedly bore scratches though later denied by witnesses.
The world’s second human heart transplant ended in tragedy when a two and a half week old Brooklyn baby died six and a half hours after the operation. Dr Adrian Kantrowitz led a 22 member team as the infant’s heart stopped and resuscitation failed. The Philadelphia infant donor’s heart was used but the recipient died at 1 p.m. EST.
The House approved a major overhaul of the federal meat inspection program by a 336 to 28 vote sending the measure to the Senate. The plan aims to extend federal standards to 15 000 plants over three years and allow states to opt into inspection programs with up to two years for readiness. Rep. W R Poage criticized the compromise saying it may not improve meat quality as much as hoped.
The U S Public Health Service warned that excessive radiation from some General Electric color televisions may affect the industry. A Pinellas County Florida survey suggested the problem is broader, with GE reporting corrections and ongoing cooperation. The surgeon general noted low overall biological danger but warned of possible long term effects.
