In a sober Amarillo speech Senator Lyndon Johnson urged immediate austerity to outpace the Russians in future weapon development. He proposed 44 to 48 hour work weeks in federal jobs and defense plants, plus cutting waste and excess defense contract spending with a citizen watchdog. He argued sacrifice should start in Washington to set a national tone.
A collage of local snippets includes a senator’s remark on Russian students, a Christmas parking promotion in Littlefield, editor Ernest Joiner’s headline using the word lousy, a note on Tawney Street gossip about Buick’s Joe Poole, and quips from Will Rogers and others.
President Eisenhower reaffirms in a letter to H. J. Porter that Texas should retain submerged Gulf lands extending about three marine leagues seaward. He cites prior statements and notes DOJ will present those positions to the Supreme Court in the Louisiana case.
The annual Christmas parade moves along Polk Street at 10 30 a m with Santa Claus and helpers handing out candy. Thirteen floats, five junior high bands plus Carver and Guyman high schools and Amarillo Air Force Base provide music from 14th and Polk to Third Avenue. Judges on the reviewing stand include Emilio Cabalero Mary Louise Natho and Judge Connally Lockhart. Three float trophies will be awarded at a noon luncheon at the Herring Hotel. The event is sponsored by the Amarillo Retail Merchants Association and the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
A 16-jet Cannon AFB F-100D squadron flew from Tokyo to Honolulu in 6 hours 21 minutes and Honolulu to Victorville in 4 hours 12 minutes, establishing two world records during Operation Mobile Zebra. Maj. Ray L. Obenshain led the 386th Fighter Bomber Squadron on the mission returning to Clovis, New Mexico after departing Nov. 12.
Vanguard Director John P. Hagen said mechanical trouble, not design faults, caused the rocket to explode two seconds after takeoff. He expects future launches but warned against repeat publicity. The incident at Gettysburg drew questions from reporters as to White House guidance.
Vanguard TV-3 failed to reach orbit as the 72 foot rocket exploded after a brief lift off at Cape Canaveral. The 6.4 inch aluminum satellite ball survived and continued emitting signals while observers watched a dramatic fireball. No injuries were reported among the 42 nearby observers.
Sen Lyndon Johnson told about 400 at the YMCA that America must sacrifice leisure and raise education to meet the space age. He warned that 100 ICBMs on one side with none on the other could invite continental blackmail and possible swift destruction. He cited Vanguard’s launch setback and urged national resolve.
The Highway Commission approved a mid-town expressway for Interstate 35 in Waco. Chairman Marshall Formby said the route would handle more traffic and benefit through traffic and local citizens while LaSalle Street remains for U S 81 and improved. The project runs from the circle at the south city limits to near U S 81 by the highway district office.
Senator Lyndon Johnson warned that new national defense spending to surpass Russia in space will trim domestic programs including farm benefits. He spoke to Panhandle Democrats at the Herring Hotel about the impact on natural resource development as federal funds are debated, citing the Canadian River Dam project at Sanford as a major Panhandle priority. He stressed that public sentiment and local concerns matter as much as federal budgeting in shaping policy.
In Atlantic City on December 6 the AFL-CIO voted 5 to 1 to expel the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, over charges of corruption led by President-elect James R. Hoffa. The roll call followed more than three hours of debate as Teamsters urged a one year grace period. Additional expulsions threats loomed for four other unions.
