An Amarillo captain in the United States Special Forces is reported missing in action in Vietnam after being seen going under water while patrols crossed a river. His wife and parents were notified by telegram. The unit had been involved in a marine assault and a broader sweep against Viet Cong positions near Phu Thu and Quang Ngai City.
The Federal Reserve Board announced it raised the discount rate. This move will raise borrowing costs for consumers and businesses nationwide, signaling tighter monetary policy as cited by UPI.

Federal investigators praised the skill of Captain Charles White who died in a fiery crash after guiding an Eastern Air Lines Constellation to a mountain side landing near North Salem New York. The collision with a Trans World Airlines Boeing 707 over New York state killed four and left most passengers unhurt.
