Rear Admiral R A Macpherson of New Orleans arrives in Amarillo to commission a Junior Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps and award the Naval and Marine Training Center. A Hereford police officer and a former state welfare supervisor were indicted by a federal grand jury in Amarillo. Paul Ramirez 30 faced one charge of beating a prisoner in Borger and another for the Hereford incident. Clifford Jeffcoat 36 of Lubbock and formerly Hale Center was indicted for a fraudulent welfare scheme using fictitious cases and post office boxes, totaling 22 632 obtained from 1965 to 1968. The acts spanned Abernathy Hale Center Olton and Sjaton. Ramirez’s arraignment on the new charge is set for Thursday. Six others were named in related interstate charges.

The burned body of 62 year old custodian Emmett Francis White was found behind the Potter County Juvenile Detention Home on Willow Creek Road after a grass fire. An autopsy will determine cause of death. a neighbor alerted probation officer Dana Barger who suspects the trash fire spread to the field. About nine acres burned. flames were still small when responders arrived.
