Soviet Echo submarine hits U S frigate Voge in Ionian Sea

In the Ionian Sea off the Greek coast, the Soviet Echo class nuclear submarine collided with the U S Navy frigate Voge. Both vessels damaged, one American sailor possibly injured, submarine tows to Crete, investigation opened, no crew injury confirmed for the Soviet sub.

Eruption at La Soufriere injures five scientists

La Soufriere in Guadeloupe erupted for about 10 minutes sending rocks, mud and ash over the summit. Five scientists were slightly injured, three rescued by helicopter, with others evacuated to a Pointe a Pitre hospital. The eruption followed a period of tremors and minor blasts, part of ongoing activity since August.

Kosygin Suffering Stroke Report Sparks Moscow River Rescue

The London Evening News says Russian Premier Alexei Kosygin had a stroke while swimming in the Moscow River. Bodyguards rescued him and officials say his condition is not serious. the report cites Moscow correspondent Victor Louis and cites no official confirmation.

Shamrock Plane Crash Kills Minister and Family

A Cessna 182 crashed west of Shamrock during a thunderstorm killing Rev. Charles Newton Vaden, 42, his wife Gloria Mary Anne, 40, daughter Roxanne Slayton, 20, and son Steven, about 14. The four were thrown from the plane which disintegrated on impact in a muddy wheat field four miles west of Shamrock near I-40. FAA investigators were to arrive to determine the cause.
