Daniel Holds Slim Lead in Texas Democratic Nomination

U S Sen Price Daniel maintained a small lead over Ralph Yarborough for the Texas governor nomination after county Democratic canvasses. Texas Election Bureau head Robert Johnson said changes between unofficial and official totals were too minor to alter the result. The latest report shows Daniel ahead by 3 547 votes out of 1 392 703 cast.

Dulles Attacks Soviet Suez Propaganda and Nasser Talks

Secretary of State Dulles accused the Soviet Union of waging a vicious propaganda campaign to block a fair Suez settlement with Egypt. He praised President Nasser's influence to accept a reasonable plan and noted global support for international control proposed by a U.S.-led coalition. Against Moscow’s effort to sow turmoil, Dulles urged direct talks without slogans while U.S. and allied plans faced Arabic broadcasts accusing imperialism and colonialism. In Dallas and Tarrant counties Yarborough’s vote efforts faced a legal pause as Dallas County canvassing was halted by a judge’s order.

AFL-CIO Backs Stevenson Kefauver Ticket For 1960 Election

The AFL-CIO executive council voted 17 to 5 to endorse Democrats Adlai Stevenson and Estes Kefauver, recommending party support to 140 unions in Chicago on Sept. 12. George Meany said the endorsement will be public but he will not campaign. The session was protracted and contentious with a split 14 to 8 on endorsing any candidate.

Nixon plans aerial drive in September campaign swing

Vice President Nixon will launch a ten to fourteen day aerial campaign tour starting mid September. GOP official L Richard Guylay said the itinerary will be announced Sept 10 after mileage checks. Nixon and family will stay with Amos Peasley in Mantoloking New Jersey until after Labor Day. The trip follows internal GOP debates over presidential contenders and AFL CIO vote expectations.

Red China admits downing Nationalist plane in Pacific

Secretary Dulles said Red China acknowledged it shot down an aircraft off its coast last Thursday but insisted it was a Chinese Nationalist plane not a Navy aircraft.
