A sweeping war scare triggers mobilization and policy moves across Europe. Germany orders mobilization in East Prussia while the Netherlands raises its discount rate and Italy bans civil flights over its air space.
The Texas Teachers Colleges board and presidents approved a 10 year building plan for West Texas State College to add a library science fine arts and classroom buildings and a new power plant. They noted current lab space limits for chemistry and biology and aim to raise enrollment toward 2000 while reviewing a 250000 athletic facility funded largely by local WPA contributions.
Claude D. Teer 57, chairman of the State Board of Control, was struck by a train near the San Antonio State Hospital after eluding a nurse during a morning walk. The nurse Miss Nell Isabell escaped injury as Teer was killed. Dr. W. J. Johnson reported the nurse in shock but not seriously hurt. The event prompted deputies to pursue a man seen fleeing hospital grounds.
Italian reports say Mussolini stands ready to mediate the dispute over Poland between Berlin and London. An unnamed government allegedly asked the Duce to intervene, with growing doubt of a negotiated solution. Vatican officials were less optimistic than over the weekend.
J E McDonald Texas commissioner of agriculture called the AAA program un American in a Missouri Farmers Association address. He argued state lines are imaginary and urged discontinuing the un American program to restore American ideals in agriculture. He linked farm prosperity to fair prices and purchasing power for farmers nationwide.
Texas officials announced the state oil field shutdown would be lifted at 7 o clock Friday morning September 1 after a meeting of the Interstate Oil Compact Commission. A new proration order will be issued to govern post reopening production.
Over one hundred high agricultural officials and experts toured the Great Plains, arriving in Amarillo for an overnight stay led by under secretary M. L. Wilson. The motorcade of 30 cars visited Panhandle A. and M. College Goodwell and other sites before continuing toward Canyon Plainview and Clovis.
The 21st annual American Legion Texas convention opened with business sessions and remarks by Pat M. Neff and Jerome L. Fritsche urging nonintervention in Europe. A. J. Montieth of Pampa was elected grand chef de gare of La Societes des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux. Wynona Nagle of Houston named to auxiliary leadership. Various officers named include Henry Mathis Texarkana Jules Naquin Port Arthur Bolton Hyde McAllen C. L. Hammond Wichita Falls J. E. Goode Laredo Elmer Polson Beaumont C. W. Jackson Wichita Falls and Pat Flood Waco.
Berlin reports show Adolf Hitler unmoved by Britain's reply on Poland while Sir Nevile Henderson met the Fuehrer for over an hour. Britain and France threaten to fight from day one if Poland resists cession of Danzig and the Polish Corridor. Moscow meanwhile delays ratification of the Russo German non aggression pact as global tensions rise and rationing and transport disruptions spread.
Confidential European memoranda date back to June 1939 and nearly reproduce Berlin Moscow terms. Reuters London Paris report claims Soviet Germany credits of £75,000,000 over two years. Whitehall and Quai dOrsay professed surprise as bankers in Berlin remained cautiously optimistic. Turkey sent a Stalin request envoy to discuss mutual interests during mid August.
Weather across Amarillo and vicinity remains fair and warm with continued high temperatures. West Texas shows partly cloudy skies and sustained heat, while New Mexico expects partly cloudy conditions and isolated thundershowers in the northwest portion. Temperature highs yesterday reached 98 and 95 in different locations with lows around 68 to 71.
Fred Keehn a Pampa hotel man lies near death in a local hospital from about 150 knife wounds after a late Sunday cafe assault. A man staying at Keehn’s American Hotel rooming house is in jail awaiting charges. Witnesses say Keehn was struck with a cafe stool before the two men fought and fled behind parked cars. A broken stool and a bloodstained pearl handled knife were recovered. Keehn received blood transfusions as doctors fought to close multiple deep wounds. District Attorney Clifford Braly ordered the other man held. Keehn remained in critical condition but showed signs of rallying later in the day.
