The U S Postal Service says two 1975 holiday stamps will depict a Madonna and child and a cherub on a bell, with no monetary denomination due to uncertain postal rates. One stamp comes from a Louis Prang design, the other from Domenico Ghirlandaio, both tied to museum collections. A 13 cent first class rate may be adopted soon, with 1 billion of each stamp printed. The Postal Rate Commission will decide on permanent or temporary rate changes affecting mail costs.
Washington AP In July the government composite index of twelve indicators rose 1.7 percent signaling continued recovery from the recession. The June increase was revised upward to 1.9 percent for a 2.9 percent rise, leaving the index 11.5 percent above February’s low while still 10.8 percent below a year ago. Labor claims fell 25 000 to 440 000 for the week ended Aug 16, and upward revisions to earlier estimates were noted.
The Democratic Party elected New York City as the site for its bicentennial year nominating convention at Madison Square Garden. The vote 11 to 9 favored New York over Los Angeles amid promises of no city employee strikes and a $200 million expected economic boost.
The governor of Portuguese Timor Lemos Pires and his staff evacuated Dili amid the civil war and took refuge on Atauro Island after being towed there by the Macdili, a Macao registered freighter, with several Portuguese army boats. The move followed the siege and ongoing unrest in the colony.
