Maj. Gen. Loren McCollum, deputy commander of the 17th Air Force in Europe, will replace Maj. Gen. Lloyd Hopwood as commander of Amarillo Air Force Base on Oct 15. A native of Edmonds Washington, he earned wings at K Field, served in World War I, was a German POW in 1945, and held posts including Joint Chiefs of Staff, plus staff college and war college graduate.
SPACE CENTER Housten (UPI) The Eyes of Texas song and its music were played into space for the Gemini 4 astronauts. James McDivitt told Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad to stand by for a message, then a thunderous burst of song followed. A vocal version was the second performance, with an instrumental version heard earlier.
Secretary Dean Rusk stated on Friday that the United States seeks direct negotiations with the Communists to pursue peace. He emphasized Washington aims for formal talks and a diplomatic path to reduce tensions.

A passenger, Bill Sams, 42, a Knox City attorney, died after a crash 12 miles south of Lawake. Two Knox City men, David Counts, 29, and James F. Hill, 22, were listed in satisfactory condition. The plane, owned by Amarillo Mooney Associates, nose dived into dirt at about 3.20 pm. Investigators noted right engine trouble and the wreck showed major impact damage. Rescue crews arrived with Goodfellow AFB aiding. Graham, who died instantly, had picked up the men in Knox City earlier.
Nine people were injured when two cars collided at the intersection of 10th and Tyler about 7 p.m. Friday. Police said Mrs. Patty Cornelius and Harry A. Doppler collided, jumping the curb and shearing a street sign. Several pedestrians were treated. some released, others held for observation.
