Four Amarillo Daily News staffers waited for results as the Amarillo Gold Sox earned their first Texas League pennant. The team beat San Antonio 9 5 Sunday afternoon, ending the season with a pennant run.
Tulsa failed to catch the Sox for the pennant as Victoria beat Tulsa 5 to 0, giving Amarillo its first pennant since the West Texas New Mexico League era in the mid 1930s. Players Davey Davis Joe Miller Dick Berardino and Mike Mathiesen watched news wires while Jim Sims used a portable radio to confirm the final results.
Two young brothers ages 3 and 5 fell into a 25 foot dry well behind their rural home near Gloversville New York. A state trooper lassoed and pulled them to safety after about two hours. Welter 23 of Franklin Park Illinois was found unarmed but with 370 dollars cash. He suffered a knee cut and had to be carried from the swamp. The hunt began before dawn last Monday after a car wreck during the escape bid.

The Navy identified the pilot as Lt Cmdr Robert Haven 36 of Columbus Ohio a North American Aviation sales engineer. Haven joined the Navy in 1943 served in attack bomber and fighter squadrons and moved to Willow Grove in 1959. He is survived by his widow Catherine six children and his parents. Police say 75 to 100 people were in the store when the crash occurred during a routine weekend drill.
