Racing plane crash and deaths at Chicago air races
At Curtiss-Reynolds Airport Chicago a navy racing plane crashed during a 50 mile speed race killing pilot Lieut J P Deshazo and a bystander Louis Weiner. Seven spectators injured none seriously. Deshazo attempted a barrel roll and died as the plane exploded near the south bleachers. Crowd fled in panic as spilled fuel and oil caused injuries from burns and debris. The race continued with Goebel winning the Los Angeles to Chicago derby in nine hours 21 minutes 21.4 seconds earning 7500 dollars.
