Police opened fire on rioting Soweto mobs amid a three day boycott endangering job access. Reports cite 7 to 23 dead, hundreds injured, and widespread violence across the township as Zulu factions clash with other groups.
The Senate voted 53 to 35 against a House amendment banning federal funds for abortions in the Labor and HEW appropriation bill. Conferees will seek another conference as debate centers on funding for poor women versus abortion access. The bill totals $56.6 billion for the current year, exceeding Ford’s request by $4 billion.
The United States urged North Korea to punish the soldiers who killed two American officers at Panmunjom last week. A new separation proposal for allied and Communist guards was discussed, with U S and UN commanders cautious about concrete actions.
Frodden said the allies demand punishment for the killing and orders to North Korean troops to avoid contact with or obstructing allied guards at Panmunjom. The admiral called for assurances of allied freedom of movement as guaranteed by the armistice agreement.
The House Ethics Committee voted 8 to 4 to authorize subpoenas for Schorr and 8 to 3 to subpoena three witnesses as it probes who leaked a secret House Intelligence Committee report to him. Schorr said he will appear but will not disclose sources, citing First Amendment protections.
Eleven year old Jeff Gyde faced charges for selling four fifty of fish bait without a license. Ottawa County Juvenile Court dismissed the delinquency charge. State Senator Paul Gillmor urged an investigation and questioned the harassment of the family.
William A. Williams was found guilty in Key West of extorting 700000 dollars from the Atlanta Constitution after editor Reg Murphy was abducted in February 1974. The 36 year old former contractor from Lilburn Georgia faced sentencing September 17 in Atlanta.
Two 19-year-old Amarillo men were arrested after a three day investigation by Potter County Deputy Eddie Kirkwood and Amarillo Detective Bert Collins. They face charges in the Maywood Inc arson and burglary and are expected to be charged with Mrs. Whitfield's murder. The 43 year old was found shot at the Toot'n Totum store on Oct 21 last year. Detectives credited the tip from the Maywood case for tying the suspects to the Whitfield killing. Weather remained warm through Friday with highs in the upper 80s to 90s.
