Chicago August 25 crowds flood downtown stores as Evanston shops clear shelves in a semi annual dollar day. About 60000 shoppers jam streets and car traffic while stores report record sales and stock depletion. Eastern Shore Public Service posts higher year end income, miners return to work after coal improvements, Parke Davis & Co. declares extra dividend.
Virginia Republican Bascom Slemp testified to the Senate campaign funds committee that he arranged a 1928 meeting between Bishop James Cannon Jr and E C Jameson the New York financier who contributed over seventy thousand dollars to support the anti Smith campaign in Virginia Slemp said he sought funds as Republican national committeeman for Virginia and noted a cable from Cannon in August 1928 asking him to check a bishop bank balance
The Roberts family Mrs E L Roberts and daughter Joy and son Buddy escaped a car fire on a highway near Oklahoma City while en route to Connecticut. Buddy drove at 35 mph when the rear end fell, severing the gas line. The car became a total wreck as flames ignited escaping gasoline. The trio returned to Amarillo by bus, clothing lost.
Weather forecast shows Wednesday partly cloudy for Amarillo and vicinity with generally fair skies across West Texas and fair conditions in New Mexico. Little temperature change expected with hourly readings around mid 80s to lower 90s, and overnight lows near mid 60s to high 60s.
The Santa Monica to Cleveland sweepstakes brings a huge aircraft fleet to English Field Amarillo for an overnight stop. A crowd is warned as pilots from Santa Monica depart Sunday and head toward Cleveland with 58 competitors in the five day race for a 25000 purse.
Harold English manager of English Field warns the public to keep off the flying field and within the police cordon. He cautions parents against letting children run on the field due to the danger from landing planes. He says the area will be strongly policed to prevent injuries to spectators and pilots.
Asheveille N C Aug 25 Col Luke Lea Tennessee publisher was sentenced to six to ten years in state prison after he and two others were convicted of conspiring to defraud the Central Bank and Trust Co of 1 136 000 His son Luke Lea Jr was fined 25 000 Wallace B Davis former bank president got four to six years Judge M W Barnhill allowed 90 days for appeals and set bonds of 10 000 30 000 and 10 000 respectively for Davis Luke Lea and Luke Lea Jr E P Charlet was discharged after being found not guilty on all counts.
The German seaplane DO X reached Charleston Port at 12 46 P M after leaving Miami at 7 15 A M en route to New York. The five hour thirty one minute flight over the Eastern Atlantic was uneventful and the crew and passengers will stay overnight with Col W P Coleman at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island.
El Paso August 25. Chief of Police W R McDowell of Amarillo tells police his $96 bill was lifted from his pocket while visiting Juarez. McDowell attends the Texas American Legion Convention. Earlier dispatch noted Mr and Mrs W R McDowell with Legion delegates touring a Juarez Castle Cabaret last Saturday night.
More than 500 delegates from Texas New Mexico and Arizona arrive in Amarillo for the Tri State Convention. Officials of the Brotherhood and its Ladies Auxiliary will address sessions over three days with gala entertainment and a welcoming reception prepared by local hostesses.
Federal Prohibition Director Woodcock announced a new enforcement order to bar women from acting as decoys blinds or informers in enforcing prohibition. He condemned reports of women and girls used by federal agents to obtain evidence by drinking and said a general regulation is being drafted to ban such practices.
Secretary Mellon cut short his vacation to rejoin the Treasury and tackle accumulating issues. He arrived after 9 am, summoned Under-Secretary Mills, attended the cabinet meeting, and resumed talks with the under-secretary. He spoke to no one about domestic conditions or the European moratorium conferences in Paris and London.
The Texas Republican party pushes to name a new Navy dirigible after Amarillo. Amarillo official W H Holmes lobbies Col RK Creager to urge the Navy to grant the honor, citing Texas ties and local support. The report notes continuation on page 13 column 8.
Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh landed at Kasumigaura base near Tokyo after a 7132 mile flight from New York. They were reported 200 miles from Tokyo on the last leg and had started from Nemuro earlier in the day. The couple was due to make a 613 mile hop to Kasumigaura in about seven hours.
Brig. Gen. Jacob F. Wolters announced that militiamen patrolling the shutdown East Texas oil fields would be reduced by about one third, effective noon tomorrow. Texas Railroad Commission heard testimony on oil waste and prevention methods in the East Texas field.
President Hoover shortened the national duck season to one month due to depleted bird numbers. Geese brant and coots are affected nationwide including Alaska. In the northern states the season runs October 1 to 31, while the southern opens November 16 to December 15. Florida starts November 20 to December 19.
The Kansas Public Service Commission removed an exemption for Chat Wells and ordered the closure of all wells in the Ritz Canton oil pool in McPherson County. The shutdown takes effect at 7 A.M. tomorrow following a previous water-well exception and a 50-barrel daily limit for Chat wells.

In Jackson Mississippi an AP tally shows Mike Sennett Conner leading Hugh White by 5 764 votes in a runoff race. With 249 of 1550 precincts reporting Conner has 22 898 to White 17 074 from a total vote of 39 912 of about 300 000. Conner backers call this a sure sign of victory while White aides offer no firm forecast.
The maiden voyage of the Navy Zeppelins Akron has been postponed to September 5 or later, announced by the Goodyear Zeppelin Corporation. The delay allows the ship to gain greater localized strength at various points after its initial scheduling for Wednesday.
Consul General Walter A. Adams reports the Yangtze flood stage near Hankow has fallen to 41 feet, down from 53.4 feet observed on August 20, indicating a slow recession of flood waters.
Still no trace is found of 17 year old J B Dotson son of Mr and Mrs H E Dotson who disappeared from 307 Cleveland Street Friday afternoon according to his parents Tuesday evening. Dotson is a Boy Scout patrol leader and had no money with him when he left home.
Melvin Bus Walker was found not guilty by 12 jurors after a 40 minute deliberation in the Wheeler killing of John Belflower. The defense portrayed Walker as acting in self defense amid a family feud that left Walker's father dead two months earlier.
Tom Hathcock of Shawnee Oklahoma said an unidentified man struck him with a club as he walked near the Wes Third Avenue underpass. He was treated for a head wound and a dislocated shoulder at the Salvation Army hospital.
