In a forceful stance toward North Korea and terrorism, the Midway heads north as Egyptians aid an airliner hijack response. North Korea accuses the United States of forcing a clash after two American officers were killed in the DMZ during a tree clearing incident. Washington sent jet squadrons and a carrier task force to the area while seeking a meeting of the armistice commission to demand assurances against further attacks. North Korea's Rodong newspaper called the U S move an invasion of its waters and warned of escalating tensions.
Egyptian troops disguised as mechanics stormed a hijacked Boeing 737 from Cairo to Luxor. They overpowered three Arab gunmen who had threatened to blow up the aircraft and hold about 100 hostages. No one was injured. The operation followed claims the hijackers acted on Libyan leader Muammar Khadafy's orders.
Amarillo Planning and Zoning Commission members voted yesterday to recommend annexation of Tradewind Airport and surrounding property. The split 4-3 decision also calls for study of three other pockets of development outside the city limits.
Planning officials outlined revenue from Tradewind annexation including 26000 in city taxes and 12000 to the hospital district while noting 6000 for road upkeep and 5000 for an airport zoning ordinance. Opponents argued state law already allows airport taxes. Commission endorses study areas and rezoning near West area.
