Amarillo Rain Totals Reach Three Inches In City Flooding

Heavy Sunday afternoon downpours flooded streets and underpasses in Amarillo. Police reported 16 crashes from 3:30 to 6:30 pm due to waterlogged streets and soaked brake bands. Local gauges showed up to 3 inches in parts, with some readings near 2 inches at several sites.

Stormshalve Amarillo traffic as floods bog vehicles

Two storms drenched Amarillo with up to three inches of rain in three hours stalling cars. Mrs. Zelda Welch and her son Johnny Russell abandoned their car in the 6th Avenue underpass where water rose high. Sam Barker of 112 North Bowyer photographed the knee deep flooding from the pedestrian walkway.

Fatal fire at Gilking Apartment kills six in Pampa

A mother, father, and three of their six children perished as a three story blaze swept the Gilking Apartment building at 302 E Kingsmill. Surviving siblings and others were hospitalized. Thomas Lewis aided tenants and saved two others. Police discovered the fire around 2 a.m. and radioed details.

Four of Six Convicts Recaptured After Jail Break

Six convicts escaped from the Fort Madison state penitentiary during Sunday church services. Four were captured by noon, three at the Fort Madison minister's home where the minister's wife, his three children, and a 17-year-old neighbor boy were held at knife point for two hours. A deputy warden crawled in through a basement window to surprise the escapees, who surrendered. A fourth escapee was caught near the prison in a wooded area. Two fugitives, Arlice Harrison Elliot and another blond youth, remained at large as a house-to-house search continued.

Swinney Kills Self After Mill Shortage Probe

Clovis New Mexico August 23 William P Swinney 23 head bookkeeper at Worley Mills shot himself in the temple with a .22 pistol after learning investigators would probe a cash shortage of 10000 to 15000 dollars. Witnesses include Clarence Worley and his son Dick Worley. He died at Clovis Memorial Hospital two hours after the incident. Funeral plans via Wheeler Mortuary Portales. Surviving wife listed at 1409 South Lea Clovis.

Boy Dies In Mishap Near Silverton Burson Lake

Robert Loyd Eiland six year old son of Mr and Mrs L V Eiland died after running from behind a parked car into the path of a passing vehicle on State Highway 256 between Silverton and Burson Lake. He died on arrival at Lockney General Hospital.
