In Mays Landing New Jersey on August 23 1950 nudists attending a National Sunbathing Association convention braved cold drizzle in colorful transparent raincoats while others wore trousers sweaters or blankets Some swam to avoid the rain and convention business continued despite the weather flies drove away by rain.
Governor James V. Allred appeals to the state American Legion to defend press, speech and assembly freedoms and oppose sit-down strikes. He denounces taking the law into hands after a labor leader was tarred and feathered in Dallas. Attending speakers include Attorney General W. McCraw and railroad officials, with Legion candidates Osborn, Danforth and La Toushe vying for command as Austin and Texarkana bid to host the 1938 convention.
Nineteen year old Jack Hamerly held without bail after an examining trial on charges of robbing a cab driver and kidnapping an airplane pilot. Cab driver Bill Ray testified Hamerly used a pistol to commandeer a ride toward Minor Stewart Airport. Pilot Robert Hunt testified Hamerly pressed him to take off and shouted keep flying when the plane was at about 2000 feet.
Helen Wills Moody won a divorce from Frederick S. Moody Jr. in Carson City after a private trial. District Judge Clark J. Guild granted the decree on grounds of mental cruelty. Moody had resided six weeks at a Glenbrook Lake Tahoe inn before the ruling.

Washington, Aug 23. The next Congress faces a packed agenda including the administration’s crop control and wage hour plans and government reorganization. A new or revised tax proposal may trigger major controversy in an election year with many members up for reelection in 1938.
Olin E. Hinkle, longtime Lexington Herald editor, will join West Texas State College Canyon as professor of journalism and publicity director. He will teach accredited journalism courses, oversee student publications, and help publicize the college. Hinkle, a Canyon native, returns to the Panhandle with a strong journalism background and family ties to the campus.
The obituary notes a journalist who earned bachelor and master degrees in journalism from the University of Missouri. He worked as a reporter for the Sweetwater Reporter and served in the United States military.
Shanghai endures a fierce night as a new Japanese assault lands troops and shells across Woosung and Pootung. Fire devastates Pootung while Chinese forces resist along the Yangtze, with Americans aiding the wounded and international districts under bombardment.
In Perryton's eighteenth birthday celebration a 12 inning thriller saw the Sunray Oilers defeat Perryton 12 to 11. Leonard Riley had four hits and drove in two, helping Perryton rally in the ninth and again in the eleventh before Sunray clinched the win. Delegations from Amarillo Pam pa Berger Spearman and other towns attended with state representatives Max Boyer and Jack Little present. Francis of Sunray delivered the decisive blow in the final stretch.
Texas election returns show five amendments carried and one defeated. Bank stock liability, destitute child aid, tax discounts, and Harris County road tax passed by large margins. abolishing the salary system failed. Voters were light across 147 of 254 counties with 53,288 votes counted.
Potter County voters backed five state constitutional amendments and rejected the return of the county fee system. Support ranged from five to one for child aid needy blind discounts and tax payment incentives, while the Harris County road levy drew the lightest support. Totals show bank liability 381 to 191, child aid 556 to 108, fee system 265 to 385, tax discount 545 to 95, Harris levy 438 to 145, blind benefit 567 to 0.
Vernon attorney R. R. Donaghey won the 112th district seat in a Monday special election. He led four opponents on virtually complete returns from Wichita and Wilbarger counties to fill the vacancy caused by Albert D. Walker’s resignation.
Mackay radio said a report indicated the Alaska Steamship Company's Latouche ran aground today at Good News Bay in the Bering Sea near Alaska.
The forecast calls for fair weather and a slight warm up for Amarillo and surrounding areas on Tuesday. West Texas west of the 100th meridian should expect partly cloudy skies and warmer conditions in the northern portion. New Mexico trends toward generally fair skies with little temperature change. Yesterday’s noon reading in Amarillo was 67 with highs reaching 95 and a low around 67 for the day.
Marion Peters of West Texas Gas at Plainview oversees his daughter Frances as she sketches a cow brand on a toy calf. Peters collects autographs from notable figures like George Bernard Shaw and Mahatma Gandhi and shares a humorous cowbrandology sketch with local clubs. He is active in civic affairs and once led the Plainview Board of City Development.
Auditor Giles L. Arriett told Texas Senate efficiency committee that an additional 3.5 million dollars would be required for the old age pension program for the coming fiscal year starting September 1. He cited a 1.626 million loan from a Dallas bank and projected pensioners near 129,000 with 14 dollars per person monthly, plus administrative costs.
New Orleans police arrested William Hart, 29, linked to Texas robberies after information from a man who died in Hot Springs Arkansas. Hart had been released from Huntaville prison farm on June 11, days before ten prisoners escaped. Alfred Lamb, 26, a former escapee, was later shot and killed in Hot Springs on August 15.
In Cody Wyoming Aug 23 weary fire crews struggle to finish mopping up a forest blaze that trapped and killed 14 firefighters and injured more than 40 others. The Absaroka Mountains fire scorched about 2000 acres as a vast wind driven blaze sparked a deadly night trapping workers.
Tucumcari mourns longtime police officer and civic leader James Alex Street born in Texas in 1870s and active as first mayor of Tucumcari, first Quay County sheriff, and US Justice Department investigator. He died after a five day illness at St Joseph's Hospital. Survived by Lula Berry and three daughters. Funeral set for midweek in Tucumcari.
