London August 21 Allied air power demonstrated over the North Sea as eleven B-17s faced twenty to twenty five Focke Wulf 190s. Six attackers were destroyed or damaged while no Fortress was lost though one cockpit was struck. The unescorted mission follows Dieppe related raids and signals improving bombing accuracy and German aircraft losses mounting in the ongoing European air war.
In St Louis on August 21 a missing maid and a diamond-studded platinum wrist watch prompted Mrs Simon Mosenfelder to act as detective. She advertised for a maid using a phone number, met a former employer who answered, and with police recovered the watch at the appointment.
