After a period of harsh ticket processing and public complaints, Amarillo traffic control reforms brought a calmer scene. A college trained traffic engineer, one way streets, signals, and trained officers improved handling of out of town visitors. Public relations training and mature policing reduced incidents and indignant letters.
Mark Miles, the city park man, reports a bumper crop of spotted spurge and prostrate knot weed in parks this year. He notes both weeds are annuals that spread from seed and tend to grow in trafficked and bare areas, though they are not as aggressive as crab grass.

In Spearman Ochiltree and Hansford Counties leaders form Palo Duro River Authority to assess a dam on Palo Duro Creek north of Spearman. Aimed at trapping at least 85 000 acre feet for Spearman Perryton Grover and Guymon with Bureau of Reclamation input and site surveys near Hardesty Oklahoma.
AFL-CIO official James B. Carey promised ballot box retribution against House members who backed the Griffin-Landrum labor control bill. He praised 201 Democrats and Republicans who voted against it and sent letters to 229 supporters threatening action, while noting the letters had no authorization from AFL-CIO President George Meany. The council at Forest Park, Pa. charged the Griffin-Landrum vote formed part of a broader legislative package.
Bonn Aug 20 West German Chancellor Adenauer calls for a warm welcome for President Eisenhower during his Bonn visit He is to arrive at 630 pm and ride an open car through narrow streets with crowds along with workers taking time off to greet him The schedule includes meetings with Adenauer and Heuss a working lunch and a news conference before he departs for London.
London August 20 AP Princess Margaret enters a pivotal year as she turns 29. If unmarried by next birthday she inherits the old maid label. She will celebrate at Balmoral with family, including Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, the Queen Mother, Charles, and Anne.
A heavy Thursday night storm brought scattered showers across the Panhandle with a two inch rainfall reported at Channing. Vega and Adrian, west of Amarillo on Route 66, lost power for hours after a lightning strike on a transformer near Vega around 6 pm. Vega recorded .41 inch of rain while Adrian faced phone outages for several hours. Sunray endured a storm yielding over .60 inch of rain. Dumas measured .35 inch as forecasters noted a line of showers moving from south of Ady toward Dumas. Continued on Next Page.

The report notes Amarillo had sun on 205 of 232 days in 1959 with 3 p.m. readings showing wind, visibility and sky conditions. Observations include cloudy and partly cloudy days with varying mph and conditions noted for the period.
The Defense Department reported Discoverer VI ejected its 300 pound capsule at 5 27 p m EST but no signals or sightings followed. Recovery teams continued search for several hours though officials warned the capsule is unlikely to be recovered. The event followed a similar test last week by ARPA and occurred near Hawaii.
A semi-trailer oil truck crashed into a tavern near Boise City Oklahoma killing one patron and injuring six others. The dead is Eric Coronado 35 of Denver Colorado pronounced dead on arrival at Cimarron County Hospital. Injured include Amelia Coronado seriously hospitalized Herman Andrews Dallas M. R. McEwen Boise City wife Phyllis McEwen in fair condition Buddy Henley Boise City and Jack Deeds Pritchett Colorado. The crash occurred about a mile east of Boise City near the Country Club tavern after a car driven by Deeds collided with the truck.
