In Evanston Illinois August 20 Rev Dr Guenter Jacob a clergyman in the Soviet zone of Germany condemned Communism saying it aims to destroy the Christian faith He told world Christian leaders there can be no synthesis between Communist ideology and Christianity Jacob a German church official spoke as one of 20 church representatives from Communist lands at the World Council of Churches assembly He called East Germany a volcanic soil under heavy ideological attack and said harsh regime measures from 1945 to 1953 gave way to a new line aimed at easing church conditions while warning Communists view Christianity as a primitive product and seek gradual propaganda to erase Christian bases He hails from Cottbus in eastern Germany’s Berlin diocese region.

The 83rd Congress adjourned at 10:50 p.m. EDT ending two years of Eisenhower’s term. The House ended at 7:38 p.m. and the Senate finished three hours later after confirming a few postmasters and hearing speeches. The Senate may recall in fall to address a McCarthy censure report. adjournment binds until the fifth day after reassembly notice.

Social Security Benefit Hike Expands Coverage Nationwide

Congress sped to President Eisenhower to sign a bill adding 10 million people to social security. The average old age and survivors check rises by six dollars monthly, and future maximums reach about 108.50. The expansion includes farm operators, farm workers, professionals, domestic workers, and voluntary state and local government workers.

President Eisenhower will review the congressional session in a half hour radio and TV address from his Denver vacation headquarters at 9 p.m. EDT Monday. The White House said the speech depends on Congress winding up so the President can depart by plane around 9:30 a.m. tomorrow. TV networks will carry the address. ABC radio will air at the same time with delays on CBS NBC and MBS in the evening.

Compromise Seen On European Army

Brussels reports Paul Henri Spaak announcing a possible compromise to save the six nation European Defense Community project. Foreign ministers meet again to finalize a plan after an eight hour plus session that followed heavy gloom and deadlock fears. The plan centers on about 30 points including acceptance of certain French revisions and a conference directive.

Nomination Withdrawn After Texas Senators Block

James P. Nash an Austin oilman, described as an Eisenhower Democrat, was confirmed as the U.S. alternate delegate to the United Nations after Wright Morrow of Houston was withdrawn. Morrow blamed Senator Lyndon Johnson for blocking the appointment, while Johnson said he was not consulted and questioned why Nash was replaced. The White House said Morrow’s nomination was a mistake and Hagerty confirmed the error.

Court Martial Under Way for Army Colonel

Lt. Col. Harry Fleming of Racine Wisconsin stands trial at Fort Sheridan for alleged collaboration with Communist captors in Korea. He is accused of leading prisoner discussion sessions and broadcasting propaganda from Prison Camp No 12 in Pyongyang. The court martial opened today and adjourned to Monday as witnesses are scattered. Fleming said he is innocent and criticized the accusers for lacking guts to face him.
