Heavy clouds broke over the northern Panhandle bringing rain to Dalhart and Shamrock. Dalhart saw 2.06 inches in an hour with over one inch elsewhere, damaging minimal garden and auto plants while rail trackage was torn up near Dalhart. Train service delayed as crews repair tracks, with rain belt extending to Texline Clayton region.

Texarkana surgeon Dr. E L Beck escaped after leaping from a car hijacked by two men. The vehicle stalled on a crossing a mile north of Texarkana and was struck by a train. Police photographed fingerprints from the wrecked auto as they hunted two suspects.
A sudden offshore gale near Atlantic City capsized at least one airplane and several fishing craft with unknown drownings. Coast guards report four boats wrecked near Ocean City and Absecon Inlet while many crews remain missing after dark. Captain Theodore Van Sant died aboard his overturned fishing boat. all passengers were saved. Weather hampered immediate verification as more wreckage and casualties are awaited.

Denver dispatch reports three signed confessions link Albert L. Bates to the Urschel kidnapping. Confessions by Mrs Ora Shannon and daughter Oleta, plus a third unidentified signer, are cited. An Urschel emissary identified Bates from photos and ransom money over $100,000 is believed hidden in Denver.
In Austin on August 20 Raymond Brooks reports that all Texas child welfare groups and workers back the state relief and rehabilitation bond issue to fund better care, food, housing, and education for underprivileged children. Telegrams from Mrs. Violet Greenhill urge agencies to respond.
The national observatory reports a cyclone disturbance in the Atlantic positioned south southeast of the Bermudas moving toward the islands. Gulf of Mexico conditions are good after a disturbance from Cuba that turned north and dissipated. No update on a third disturbance in the central Caribbean.
Fort Worth police detained a 23 year old man and a 22 year old woman and sought a third suspect in the abduction of J H Slade of Amarillo and theft of his car and clothes. Slade, whose father was a noted oilman, said opiate laced drinks left him unconscious, later waking in a Dallas hotel. The case appears linked to an auto theft ring and the authorities indicated charges would be filed soon.
Texas state contracts will be awarded only to bidders complying with NRA requirements. The board of control announced this policy during bids for a powerhouse at the state deaf school in Austin and said it will apply to all state construction. Highway work already follows government hours and wages rules and material sourcing to meet federal conditions.
In Providence Kentucky on August 20 Joseph Bailey 22 of Paducah a pilot and two passengers John Holloman 21 and James Henry Morris 20 died when the airplane wings crumpled and the craft crashed at Shamrock mine about a mile from town.
