A three story Brooklyn Plaza Dance Hall burned and collapsed trapping fire crews and civilians. Rescue efforts rushed amid alarms as bodies and injuries were recovered, with at least seven firemen on the roof engulfed and several others missing or harmed in the debris.
D L Payne convicted of manslaughter in the Crosbyton courthouse killing of J Sweaza on May 1 and sentenced to five years in the state prison. The same day the case related to Maud Rippey’s murder was moved to Amarillo for trial. Payne awaits a possible new hearing and arraignment on the Rippey charge.
American Legion Auxiliary members in Texas are urged to attend the state convention in Galveston August 28 and 29. Members are advised to wear old gray bonnets and summer attire, with plans including teas, auto rides, bathing, boat trips, street parades, concerts and dances. The event coincides with the American Legion region convention, promising a large delegation.
Paris reports Parliament likely to approve a plan to tar and seal France's national and secondary highways with anti dust treatment. The project, estimated at 100 million dollars, should span about eight years.

Berlin August 20 An extraordinary cabinet session led by President Ebert approved emergency measures to confront the worsening economic and social crisis due to the mark’s collapse. The cabinet plans to announce by tomorrow the draconian steps, including requisitioning private foreign currency reserves to halt the decline and secure funds for food imports.

AUSTIN Aug 20 Governor Neff released a statement saying he gave rangers no further orders on the floggings cases at Iowa Park Amarillo and Port Arthur and that they should finish investigations under Lieutenant Governor Davidson’s prior term He added no new directives unless urgent situations arose The Amarillo ranger report by Captain Frank Hamer was not yet delivered and there was no word on it in Austin

NEWMAN Ga August 26 John W Minter father in law of Millard Trout ton who was kidnapped and killed a fortnight ago tonight made a complete confession to having slain Trouton Minter said he shot Trouton five times through the head after he had been kidnapped by Mister s friends for that purpose.
An unidentified Ku Klux Klan speaker at a Marion rally claimed the Herrin mine killing will be only a drop in the bucket if law in Williamson County remains unenforced. The event occurred near the sheriff's office with a parade preceding the meeting.
Miss Loraine Stephens of Sweetwater and Mrs. O H Kilpatrick of San Angelo and the latter's two children were slightly injured when the automobile they were riding in overturned in a creek twelve miles south of San Angelo Texas Aug 20.
A 17 year old orphan girl alleges she was assaulted by her employer D Hardin owner of a second hand furniture store on East Fourth Street. The incident occurred in a rear room of the store where she was arranged to stay. Hardin was arrested after a complaint filed by District Attorney Lloyd Pletcher. He waived examining and was released on bond of 1,000 awaiting grand jury action. The girl's parents are dead and she has two brothers. She had been living with them while employed at the store for several months.
