A Virginia couple, Robert Gene Thomas and Mary Louise, both 33, were arrested in Shreveport after a year of check kiting across states. They allegedly deposited 60 in five banks under different names and wrote large checks on other accounts, with only about 400 in four Shreveport banks at arrest. Amarillo will prosecute as the first of about 66 cities involved.
Washington AP. Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell released government figures showing sustained increases in wages prices and profits in the strike closed steel industry. The data were issued at the direction of the President.
President Eisenhower encouraged bargaining while avoiding taking sides in the 36 day steel strike. Secretary Mitchell declined to offer settlement suggestions, stressing responsibility lies with management and labor. The report is seen as supporting both sides, with costs totaling 300 million dollars weekly and 70 million in wages, highlighting wage and productivity tensions. R Conrad Cooper of the steel industry praised the report for placing steel wages atop the worker list and noted rising employment costs outpacing output per hour,pressuring steel prices.
Three lone wolf robbers hit three San Francisco and Oakland banks, escaping on foot with 11,000 dollars in cash and travelers checks. One wore a grey flannel suit, another an Ivy League cap, the third appeared intoxicated. The Crocker-Anglo National Bank and Bank of America branches were hit, with 205 and 7,820 payments plus 3,249 in a later Elmhurst Branch robbery.
