Allied Bombs Continue Wewak Raid and Invasion Prep

Allied forces intensified air strikes on Wewak New Guinea finishing off most of the 225 enemy planes sighted and destroying cargo ships while signaling invasion plans. In Europe a radio statement urged occupied peoples to prepare for the coming invasion as Eisenhower declared Allied armies ready to strike from Sicily.

Tokyo air assault on Borneo cripples ships and supplies

Allied communique reports a fierce raid on Borneo with bombs and fires sinking or burning three cargo ships and damaging harbor and town areas. John Wheatley Taken by Death

John G. Wheatley, assistant cashier of the First National Bank, died following injuries from a car accident on Aug 2. Born in Waxahachie, he moved to Amarillo at age six and built a long banking career here, ending with the Amarillo Bank and Trust and later the First National. He would have turned 60 on Sept. 7.

Senator Connally to Attend Panhandle Appreciation Dinner

The Panhandle will host Senator Tom Connally at a September 2 dinner in the Herring Hotel at 7 30 pm. Forts Wipe Out 3 Years Work

Stockholm reports that a U S Flying Fortress raid on Trondheim Norway July 24 largely erased three years of work on the German submarine base. The concrete hangar housing six U boats was ruined and workshops and equipment were wrecked. The Trondheim gas works harbor destroyer submarine cargo ship four steam tugs and a floating dock were sunk or damaged.

Bender and Finger Die After Borger Plane Crash

Elmer H. Bender Phillips Petroleum refinery superintendent dies in an Aeronca crash near Borger airport shortly after 6 am. George Finger, owner of George Finger Automobile Agency, is severely injured. Bender and Finger, longtime civic leaders and fliers, were en route to Kansas City when the accident occurred.
