Washington August 17 AP Price Stabilizer Michael DiSalle announced plans to stiffen cattle price controls and to pursue growing signs of a black market. He will deploy much of the OPS enforcement staff to stop price ceiling violations with the Justice Department prioritizing cattle and beef cases. DiSalle to convene beef slaughterers in Washington next Wednesday to discuss changes to ceilings, including buyers and sellers and individual beef animals. Also under review are reduced freight allowances and further restrictions to curb midwestern outflow. The American Meat Institute blamed regulations and quotas for black markets, claiming established firms cut beef volumes under the system.
The full committee voted 20 to 3 against issuing a formal report on the MacArthur ouster inquiry. It will allow members to file individual views, with eight Republicans preparing a forthcoming statement criticizing U S Far Eastern policy while not endorsing MacArthur's Korean war proposals.
In Chicago August, prisoners in the Cook County jail began a hunger strike. Sheriff John E. Babb said all 12 inmates in the maximum security section joined, following the escape of Harry Williams who killed a guard. Washington August 17 AP Six more Communist Party leaders were arrested in the fourth roundup since the Supreme Court upheld the conviction of 11 top leaders in June. Steve Nelson, trained at the Lenin School in Moscow, was jailed in Philadelphia on $100000 bail and sent to Moyamensing Prison waiting for a hearing August 31. Other detainees include William Albertson a Detroit union secretary, Benjamin Lowell Careathers Sr a Pittsburgh CP treasurer, James Hulsedolsen a Western Pennsylvania representative of The Daily Worker and charter member, and Andrew Rudolph Onda of Pittsburgh.
The House passed over President Truman's veto by 318 to 45 to grant pensions of 126 dollars monthly to war veterans disabled by causes not connected to service. The tally exceeds the two thirds needed, and Senate passage would make it law, marking the first veto override of the session.
Maynard Drake reported at Amarillo Safety Council that T-man traffic enforcement will intensify. Navy lieutenant Richard E. Longarine, 29, flying a Grumman Bearcat from Amarillo, made a dead stick emergency landing on Highway 136 west of Borger after engine trouble. He crawled from the wreck, sustained shoulder cuts and a facial wound, and was taken to North Plains Hospital. Investigators from Amarillo Held pursue the crash amid a traffic jam as the plane is prepared for move back to Amarillo.

A suspicious black male was seen in the 1400 block of Harrison but vanished before officers arrived.
Dr Louis F Michalek testified that his tragic error giving the wrong drug caused two volunteer deaths. Coroner Iverson resumed the inquest into the deaths of Jack Dillard and Ardys Pearson. Pearson and the others described how volunteers were recruited and the mistaken administration was discovered.
Detroit August 17 United States motor vehicle registrations last year totaled 49,176,796, the Automobile Manufacturers Association said in its annual year book, up from 44,670,588 registrations at the end of 1949.
