United States pushes for unified Korea under UN plan

In LAKE SUCCESS Aug 17 the United States said any UN peace program for Korea must aim at a unified and independent Korea. Some diplomats saw a hint the UN might push beyond the 38th parallel, but chief US delegate Warren R. Austin avoided such direct implications while outlining peace aims to the Security Council.

Two Killed as Auto Boat Crash on US 66 West of Vega

A multi party crash on US Highway 66 seven miles west of Vega left Arthur C. Cravens and his wife dead. Four others, including a Whittier California youth and passengers from Ohio and Oklahoma, were hospitalized in critical to serious condition. A boat trailer rear impact triggered the sequence as rain slicked pavement contributed to the wreck.

Push Payments For Dependents

Senate and House committees approved legislation to provide quarters allowances for families of the lowest enlisted grades. Monthly payments would range from 45 to 85 dollars, with a service member adding 40 dollars from his pay. A recruit starts at 75 dollars monthly. bills vary but both designate the aid as quarters allowance.

Two Birmingham steel mills shut by strike Monday

Two Anti Red Bills Confronting Senate

In Washington on August 17 the White House anti Communist bill was introduced in the Senate. The Judiciary Committee quickly passed a rival McCarran bill 9 to 3 to require registration of Communists and Red front groups. Mundt and Ferguson also backed a third registration based measure. Reds Massacre Seven U S Tankmen in Korea Fight

Seven captured American tank crewmen were executed in the Hill 303 battle near Waegwan as North Korean forces massacred about 30 tank crews. The bodies lay on the road near two knocked out tanks two days earlier. A general officer said the report listed seven executions. Earlier, three U S soldiers identified two North Korean prisoners as members of the Reds who shot 32 bound captives.
